Default Dart Iron Eagle heads

Are these good heads how do they compare to the sportman 2. I am looking at the ones form sdpc they have a kit for 900 bucks. The combo would be
350 bored 30
lunati voodoo cam 60102LK 262/268 219/227 .468"/.489" 112/108 Hyd/Hyd 1400-5800
Weiand Stealth duel plane intake and a holley 770cfm carb.

This is what the sdpc kit has
64cc Dart Iron Eagle head kit for small block Chevy. 2.020"/1.600" valve diameter (intake/exhaust).

The SDPC Dart Iron Eagle Head kits includes one pair of Dart Iron Eagle assembled cylinder heads, ARP High Performance Series 170,000 psi head bolts and a pair of Fel-Pro #1003, pre-flattened steel, .041 in. thick, 4.166 in. bore, head gaskets.

Thanks

I'm using the 180 Dart IEs on my slightly modified 355 and they are real torquey with my XE 262 cam. I think I remember some posts here on the Forum where some said the Dart and Sportman head were essentially the same. At $900 for the complete kit, sounds like a good deal to me.

I just got a pair of these about three weeks ago

Wish I would have done so a LONG time ago - they made a huge difference.....summit also has a compare function - search the heads you're considering and click compare..

I too have the Dart IE Platinums 200CC. I just finished installing this combo with a new Solid Crane cam F-278-2. The cam was reccomended to me by Kgull. So far seems like a great choice although I have only logged 7 miles on the rebuilt engine. $900 sounds like a great price for assembled heads with ARP bolts and gaskets. I know I paid a little more than that. I also had to take them in to be cleaned up a little bit, flash, in the combustion chamber area. Nothing a head shop cant service in a day. These heads solved alot of issues I had with my older LT-1 heads. This head, cam, header, Intake (Vic Jr.) seem to balance very well with plenty of vacume and smooth idle. Something I never thought I would get on a high power cam.

I have those on my Vette as well.

As to the original question, The Dart heads have better bronze valve guides. The World Products Sportsman 2's have cast iron just like original GM so you know they will not last as long.

Don't know cams very much. The cam is what was suggested by Summit given my planned engine, tire size, auto weight, tranny and gear ratio. My overall setup is all follows:
350 block bored .030 over = 355 CI
CR 9.7:1
Dart 180 IE w/64cc chambers
CC XE262 cam (probably sb XE268)
Holley 670 Street Avenger
Elderbrock EPS Intake
Stock 350TH tranny
Stock 355 rear
B&M 2500 stall converter

This has turned out to be a perfect DD but not what you'd want to drag. I'm doing a 60mi round trip each day to work and average ~17MPG.

Hope this helps.

Heads aren't much of a problem but you should plan on removing everthing attached to them includng intake, PS pump, alternator, etc.

The cam can be a little more of a pain since it sits behind the water pump and timing chain. For example on my 79, you'll have to drop part of the steering linkage in order to drop the pan in order to pull the timing cover in order to pull the timing chain in order to pull the cam. I didn't do it this way since I pulled and stored my original engine and replaced it with another. I'm thinking that if you try to replace the cam with the block in place, you might have to also pull the radiator to give you enough clearance in the front of the block.

This post will put you back up to the top and our other Forum Brothers and Sisters will help you out. They're such a good bunch of folk.

I am leaning in the direction of the 180cc intake runner, 64cc chamber Iron Eagles as a replacement for my stock 186 heads on my '69 L46. They are about one step up on the intake runner volume (165 up to 180) and am sure they benefit from new metalurgy and other improvements since the 186 was produced in the late 60's. Considering I paid $850 plus S&H for just the 180cc, 72cc heads for my L48 a few years back, this IS a good value.

Will also need a fresh intake gasket.
