Default Need info on an 80

I am with the C-4 group. Have no idea about an 80. I am considering picking up an 80 if the price is right. It is not running, and I will pull the 305 out and put a 350 in it place. I am looking at between 350-400 hp.
My question is will the auto hold this kind of hp if rebuilt?
Thanks!

You won't be able to pass Kalifornia smog testing. The car must have all original smog equipment, including the 2-1-2 exhaust with cat...forever.

To answer your question, Yes the TH-350 is a great transmission and if built correctly will handle 400 HP no problem.

If you are putting in a different engine you may run into hood clearance problems.

I know you wrote about the transmission holding up, but that question was answered. So onto other things. You may need to look into getting a high rise hood of some sort. I imagine you wil be using an aftermarket intake manifold and carb setup.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you stick with one of the lower intake manifolds and carbs. Remember that the 305 was only sold in California; everywhere else, they sold the 350.

Was not aware that the 305 was only sold in Calif, the rest had 350's. That is why I am here.
I want to set the car up as stock as poss., with air and etc. Just want hp.
The car is not a big item in Calif. being a basket case, and the smog issues. I will see what I can get the car for!!!

Thanks to all!

RPM air-gap and speed demon carb, that's the way to go. It fits!

Sounds like a fun project if pricing right. I have an 80 and retain all the emissions gear. However:

The old 1980 L82 is in the corner and I run a ZZ4 crate motor. It looks stock for passing Dallas area emissions. I run a high flow cat since the new ones do not restrict little it any. The air pump, EGR etc... are retain.

The key would be to use a roller cam block or get a roller retro fit kit because you can then run high lift short duration for max power and lower emissions. Not sure if they match block numbers in CA so you may need to have a block machine to have them removed.

Your car will have the first gen computer I believe so the prom may have to be upated for a 350 which a number of shops should be able to do these days. I doubt you'll be able to go to a non computer distributor or carb unless they don't check and it they don't just order the stuff for an 80 L82 since the emissions equipment will be close to the CA 305, mainly the air pump which regular 350's did not have but the L82 needed for cam overlap.

I might be missing something here, but if the car will not be titled in CA, and if you do not have to be concerned with CA emissions requirements, why buy a California 305 when there are any number of 350 '80s out there? Look for an L-82 car with all the goodies you want and go from there.

Mike

I was not looking for an 80, in fact I was not looking for another Vette. I have an 89 that is like new (after a ton of money)!
The 80 happens to have the 305. If I can pick it up for the right money, I would gut the smog, computer, and make a fun driver and sell it in Oklahoma. I have a son stationed there.
I am retired and would like to have another project!
