Default which fuel injection for 406...tpi???..aftermarket??

Hi guys. I am thinking about doing fuel injection on my 81'. I can get a killer deal on a TPI system off of a 86' Corvette and am thinking of going that route unless you guys tell me some good reasons not too. I have also looked at the Holley Stealth Ram and the Accel DFI multi-port. To run a stock TPI and buy an Accel unit to control it would be cheapest for me from what I have seen so far. Which system would you all recommend?

I am also thinking of going with a roller cam during this project. I would like a crane roller with retro-fit hydraulic lifters. I can go to .560 lift with my -1 sportsman II heads. Any recommendations? I am thinking I can handle a longer duration due to my high compression ratio. What else would i need to do to go roller? Cam button? Timing cover? If so which parts do you recommend?

BTW, I have a 406 with 10.5 or 10.75:1 CR, world products sportsman II's, headman headers, true duals with no cats, 200 4R trans with a 3.37 diff. (I think, it's a stock 81' with automatic rear diff).

TPI's peter out at about 5,500 rpm. Look at the TPIS mini-ram or other LT1 style systems. They flow much better, and are much easier to tinker with. IMO.

Which system do you guys recommend? Accel, Holley? I don't like the programming of the Edelbrock so that is out.

Tuned Port Injection - TPI?
What do you mean they die early? Or that it can't handle larger cubes?

I would think a larger throttle body would cure the 2nd and don't see why they can't flow any rpm needed.
TPIS?
Enlighten me.

Well, I can go into alot of detail but I'll keep it simple, TPI was designed for the 305 engine

I've heard lots of good things about the Holley Commander 950. I'd stay away from the TPI unless you're really looking for a budget EFI system. There's lots of info about the Commander in this forum. A few people are running it on big blocks, so it should feed your 406 just fine.

Thats why im looking to build a lt-1 now instead,my 360 maxs out at 5300 no more, the tpi runs out of steam after 5000,stock that is.Lots of low end torque though esepcially in a 406 but you wont like it top end.Tpis setup miniram would work or a holley stealth ram too.

I'm modifying an LT1 intake (and heads) to work on my 412. It flows a lot better than the TPI intake, but can use the same electronics. You just have to drill a hole for the distributor and block off the EGR system.

TPIS = Tuned Port Injection Specialties..a company that has been making LT1 - styled injection systems for years. They provide everything you need.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I've got some questions, also. On a 350, if I want to go with a TPI set up, will it work with the XE262 cam? Or would I need to go with a cam with a wider LSA? Mine is a 110.

MEGASQURT

learn it.

live it.

love it.

its an open source fully programable fuel and spark and way more control system. it can even do traction control and nitrous.

and its inexpensive

megasquirt.com

its the only programable injeciton system i would use for many reasons. mostly cost and open source.

i know many many people running megasquirt. they wouldnt have it any other way.

edits: if you go with megasquirt and learn how to tune your fuel and spark tables you will be laughing your *** off about how bad a carb and mechanical/vaccum advance is for total engine performance.

assuming you have a well dialed in carb, the ability to make a good spark table alone will set your engine way ahead of these guys obsessing about 36 degrees total advance and recurved distributors. having 36 degrees advance from 3000 rpm to redline is borderline retarded when compared to a spark table.

also a wide band oxygen sensor is your best friend. and megasquirt can comunicate with a wide band O2

i know a good amount about fuel injection in general if you wanna hit me up at some point to discuss.

That's why you see so many at the race track and you hardly ever see a four barrel carb and single plane intake

I'm just going with a stock GM computer, reprogrammed for my engine. Fortunately, I have EPROM burning capability.
