Option to buy 69 coupe 427????
Hello- My name is Matt and I just signed up today. I am currently a huge Car Nut as I currently own a Triple Black 67 SS Chevelle Conv. I am asking for assistance regarding a Purchase of a 69 Coupe 427, 4spd, (I think) 390hp car. A friend here at work mentioned it to me in everyday conversation that his Brother In-Law has one and is serious about selling it. According to my buddy at work it is in great Condition with very minor flaws, not concours but a better than normal "driver" (Honestly) Just what I am lookin for if it all checks out to be true.... As I never understood the Museum Quality Trailor Queens!!!
Anyway To my question - What would a 69' 427, 390hp, 4spd, coupe, TTops, with Side pipes be selling for these days? Not sure of miles or color yet.
I have searched on Ebay, Auto Traders, and a Couple Local Places, and this Price this Guy wants for this Car seems to good to be true at ($25,000). He is an older gentleman looking to not have to maintain old cars anymore as he is looking to retire.
Please let me know your much saught opinions... I know there lots and Lots of things that can change price or Value, but please let me know your best thought as far as what info I provided.
Thank You for your help-
Matt

If there are no surprises, it is definitely worth the 25K--as we've all heard---"they are out there"--and you might just have found one.

Try to get some pics for us if possible. The L36 (390hp) was the entry level Big Block and are also the most abundant. Also try to run the numbers and see if everything matches up.
Best of luck.
Best of luck.

What would be rare is finding a specific 427 with one of these designations:
L68, 427, 400hp, only 2072 made.
L71, 427, 435hp, only 2722 made.
L88, 427, 430hp, only 116 made.
L89, 427, 435hp, only 390 made.
and the elusive ZL1.........only 2 made.

True, 1969 had the most Big Blocks of any year with the L36 being the most plenitful. The L36 is not a rarity by no strech but is IS a BB no less.

a Deal
Ummm We're not looking at a C2 here, and $25,000 is about double less a little bit for a 69 L36, Pricing is in the throws of change but I'd ask around a bit and not act too interested, Pictures would be nice. Good Luck!

$25K is high, IMHO. An L-36 4speed coupe in above average to good driver condition w/matching number block & tranny and sidepipes is worth closer to $20k in most parts of the country.

What's the deal with a 69 427 that makes them so rare? Hell, they made a bunch (10,531) of them with the L36 427 engine. Is it that folks don't want to get rid of the BB? I flipped around checking some car for sale sights, most refered to their 427's as rare, and I think I only saw one or two with anything other than the basic L46, or the L36. Folks are advertising any 427 as "rare".
I don't get it..........

Bear in mind that it was the last year for 427s though, not to mention that 69 is the preferred year for quite a few Vette enthusiasts. Then factor in the reality that in the 36 years since they were made alot of them have been totalled or have lost the matching numbers 427...you can see how they become less common as time goes on. I couldn't care less how they're categorized because I have mine & enjoy it regardless of whether others covet it or not. Drive a pumped up 427 sometime & I think you'll understand.
Don't take me wrong......I'm just trying to understand the 69 "rare" mentality.

MsVetteMan,
No worry, the term rare is abused for profit in the collector car business & is also open to interpretation.
Krazybones,
Good luck in your quest. You may want to do a search for Corvette value guides. I found one a few months back that was pretty good but I can't remember the name. It would help if you have a buddy who knows what to look for & can go with you to check it out. We'll be looking forward to the pics.

What is rare these days is to actually have a 427 in there as opposed to a transplanted 454, 402 or 396. The engines all look alike.
They "only" made 10,000 or so. Granted that is large amount. But factor in how many are gone after this many years and you can make the argument they are at least somewhat rare in "surviving" terms.
I went to four car shows in Florida last year including the Turkey Run at Daytona Raceway (which is huge) and I did not see one '69 427, not one.
FYI
Regards, Mark

They are rare in the sense that most did not survive intact. Many were wrecked by drivers not used to the power and torque. Others had their engines either blown up or (cringe!) swapped out for small blocks during the 80's gas crisis. I should know; my highly optioned 69 427-400 NOM coupe suffered both insults before i got a hold of it.
If that 390 is original, in good condition and has nice options such as 4 spd, AC, PS, PW, PB it is more than worth the low to mid-$20s. I wouldn't take less than $20 for mine. Good luck in the hunt!

I bought my '69 L36 in Nov. 2002 for $16K. Overall good, not great, condition. Since then, I've sunk a lot of money into it to bring it up to "very good" condition. I'm afraid to tally all the bills, but I'll guess that I've easily sunk another $10K into it.
Things I've done include:
- New exhaust system
- Body work on hood, passenger door, and rear end
- New steering box
- New clutch
- Rebuilt transmission
- New shocks all around
- Fixed power steering
- New front tie rods
- New brake calipers and rotors
- New Cragar SS wheel
- New (rebuilt) Q-Jet
- New carpeting
- New shift console
- Upgraded stereo
- Refurbed interior panels
- New seat cushions in the original leather seats
- Countless minor fix-its all over the car
It's been a bigger investment than I anticipated, and I doubt that I could sell it at a price to recoup all I've put into it. But I love this car and I don't plan to sell it anytime soon, so I'm just enjoying the heck out of it. It's a real head-turner and a blast to drive!

Upload the pictures one a time. At the bottom of the web page it gives you the links for the picture. Cut and paste the one that has IMG in it directly into a CF post. Keep uploading pics and cut and paste the links to the CF post till you are done.
If you have any probs IM me.
