Default Axle Seals - need some advice

I'm posting this for my uncle who doesn't have internet access. The rear axle seals in his 81 are leaking and he wants to know if there is a way to get at them without dropping the rear end ALL the way out. Any other advice you could give on how to do the job right the first time would be greatly appreciated.

This is one of those things that sounds worse than it really is. Yes, you could just drop the rear cover/mount assembly but once you've gone that far, the diff is basically ready to come out anyway.

you needto get the half shafts out to change seals, bad news is that there is a c clip on the shaft so you must remove the differential cover to get at it.
in answer, it could be done but probably not easier to leave it in as you must disconnect most of it anyway.
