Advise on buying a corvette from 1978 with apparent rust
Good evening, I’m Joris I’m from Portugal and I would like to buy this beauty but I came across some worry posts regarding rust and I would like to have professional input of the car I found
The actual owner is transparent on having rust issue on the conducteur floor side to be repaired but I’d like to understand the extent of the repair via your expertise
I did not see the car yet but there are a lot of photos from the actual owner - price is 15.5K€
Documentation from Canada
Motor is running but haven’t been drove since 2006
only 29K miles
Everything seems to be good except this rust and potentiel oil leak underneath everywhere ? If you could confirm also and help me on the buying
thank you everyone 🙏🏼
For me seems to be the worst part of rust

This car has been HORRIBLY repaired in the frame area on drivers side. That alone tells you, do not even consider this car. In my opinion this is not even worth $2000.00 USD. I see ten thousand dollars in PROPER repairs to make this a safe.

. Run away from this one…..

Have to agree. Looking at the photo of the windshield, I can see rust peaking out from under the trim.
The Frame looks scary.
RUN!

You can see the patch piece - oil filter photo(s).
I spent 2 years looking for my first Vette, and that was over 40 years ago now...
My advice would be keep looking...

Photos were reposted, with bad sections circled and with arrow's. Obviously been patched with extremely poor welds!
Not wishing to be cruel, but are you blind!
Next time take a expert on vintage cars, or preferably a C2- C3 expert with you. This car is SO CLEARLY bad.
We didn't even ask for photos of the problem areas.
there is a "Sticky" Thread above, 10 rule's buying your first C3. Please read it.

And not a single clear picture of the car itself?
That looks like an 80 L48 automatic, and in the absolute best color combination.
But with that frame rust? Hard pass.

The driver side floor pan (pedal location) is completely rotted away. Very poor attempt at patching the frame rail as well. I can just imagine what the #2 body mount location is like....ugh

No way does that car have 29,000 miles on it. More like 129,000 miles on it and it also wasn't taken care of. The frame is a hard No on purchasing it. And as others mentioned the car is going to need an extensive amount of work in the future. The rust seeping out from the trim just goes to show that the birdcage is probably rusted. If you wanna waste some time remove the lower kick panels and check. I am sure you can find a much better specimen out there for the same price.

Guys, keep in mind that the OP is in Portugal, and he said that the "documentation" is from Canada, so it's a good bet that the car still might be there, and he's looking at having it shipped to Europe. So, the usual inspection of the birdcage, windshield frame, etc, isn't easily possible, before purchase.
What would scare me, along with the rusty, poorly repaired frame, is the rusted out floor pan, with the carpet showing through, and the fact it hasn't been driven in 18 years.....especially if the engine was simply started up without proper preparation, just to get it outside to have some pictures taken. The engine could have had some serious damage done to it.
In other words, even more reason to avoid this car.

Aside from Alaska & Siberia, CANADA has some of the harshest winters on planet earth & "NOT" Corvette friendly. Search California, Arizona, & Nevada somewhere DRY to reduce the risk of surprises !!!
