Default Rear speakers

I have a 1978 with 6x9 rear speakers floating around the back. How have you all attached rear speakers?

I agree, but have to wonder if the factory mounts will take 6X9's with a large, heavy magnet. They don't seem all that sturdy.

I assumed he was talking about aftermarket 6X9's. OP should elaborate. Factory speakers then for sure the stock mounts.

@interpon posted his direct factory replacement 10 Ohm speakers.

One of my cars came with a set of 6" round speakers on a custom plywood mount. Nothing I've seen indicated that aftermarket 6x9s would fit in the stock location. But perhaps a template made from the stock mount, and built up a bit, would provide the clearance needed.

mine needed a little space outward.
the diameter of magnet and over all speaker thickness were just too
much for the stock area.
I just shimmed the speaker surround/plate, board out.
looks fine.

It isn't if the speaker mount could support a 6X9" heavy magnet speaker, but its how big of a speaker magnet can fit between the speaker mount. After looking at aftermarket speakers specifications, I found Rockford Fosgate R169X2 had the smallest magnets. But even those were a shoehorn fit.

I did my own cabinets with about $20 worth of material then attached to the inside of the car. And a 2 channel amp where the jack used to go. And the t tops fit if need be.
