Default 69 Inner fnders & firewall

So I have the heads off my 1969 convertible. Since I have a little more room, I'm going to spruce up the firewall and inner fenders. What is the correct finish? It almost looks like the inner fenders may just be raw fiberglass.

Thanks in advance!

The original engine compartment blackout (heck, anything to do with the blackout operation) was really hit or miss. Various parts of the car (including the engine compartment) were supposed to be sprayed with black paint in order to make the car look more presentable to a new owner. As you witnessed, many areas were missed or overlooked and remained bare fiberglass. The top of the firewall and inner fender area that runs parallel with the length of the car usually were hit pretty well, but the outer areas of the inner fender/wheel wells as well as the lower portion of the firewall received little or no paint at all.

That’s how the factory did it…. Obviously, you can do a much neater and complete job than what the factory did when the car was built. The choice is ultimately yours!

I would call it satin rather than semi gloss. Krylon Industrial #1613 as well as John Deere Blitz Black that Mr. D noted are good substitutes for the original blackout paint.

The Krylon Industrial (5 Ball) KO1613A07 is almost impossible to find at Lowes or Home depot these days for some reason, I get mine from Global Industrial in 6 can paks. It's as good as John Deere and looks great in the engine compartment.
