If I were going to buy a used car today for a DD spending $22,000 For any car with 35k miles per autotrader I could get a 2016 Buick Enclave, a 2018 Jeep Cherokee or a 2018 Camero. My first choice would be this corvette. Despite the 42 year old technology the corvette would be more exciting to drive. I don't consider most c3's to be collectible car that should be stored and looked at, they should be driven. My 78 base oupe is tucked away for the winter but I would drive it if my 86 Mercedes self stopped working. Flame if you must but even though I really like c3's, all of them, I don't see them as escalating in value as a collectible. But I wouldn't pay 22k for one either. For this one, maybe 10 to 12k.

I was quite set on getting an 80's MB SEL (red, bright polished wheels) - a beautiful machine and looked cool on the Dallas TV show. But, I also had a draw to a red 82 C3 from seeing them brand new on the Chevy dealer's lot near my college campus while riding my bike to class. So, I took an informal poll of my wife & kids, as well as friends, and colleagues who had owned one or the other, or in two cases, having owned both. To my surprise it was a no-contest across the board. The common and expensive engine (timing belt reliability on a non-freewheeling engine) and electrical issues are renown on the Mercedes of that era, but mostly my kids and their early 20-something friends went crazy over the C3, and politely smiled at the high def MB SEL photos on my laptop. So, the C3 won-out and after fully restoring it to Concours level (2018, Detroit metro Concours) I am so grateful for the unanimous vote for my C3. I dunno, maybe it's a midwest thing, but what, if any other hobby car do you have people wave, give a thumbs-up and often honk at you while cruising out on the road, and goggle over the car's lines at a public place? Young kids seldom approach approach me to say "I like your car!" at gas stations with their parent/s smiling in agreement, or while they are walking through our neighborhood while Trick-or-Treating, when they see my '68 Camaro or yellow 2017 Mustang convertible?! There's something about the C3 that captures people's fascination across the age spectrum and brings a lot of smiles.

Safety Car
The 1980 was the first C3 to have the proper front end after the bumpers were killed off . . .
