Aftermarket tilt column (1968)
What do you guys think of these aftermarket tilt columns? Would make getting in and out of my '68 a little easier. Also going to probably switch to a 14" wheel.

I have one in my 76 and it works fine. My original T/T column broke internally in several areas (tilt ball, ignition rack, bearings worn out, etc) and I an not a NCRS guy so I just couldn't justify the cost to rebuild it vs aftermarket. I cut the mounting brackets off my old column, got it in the right place, and just spot welded it in.

I'm going with an Ididit as well.
They told me to order it once I install my Borgesen steering box and they will manufacture it to the exact measurement.

im 6'1 and 35 years old, i bought a tele column for my 68 and got the 14 inch stock looking wheel and its still hard to get in and out, but better then it was with non tele and stock wheel. a tilt would make a world of difference i think, i bought a tilt tele for my 69 and once its done next year i can report on how good it is.

The original 68 plastic wood steering wheel was a bad GM joke! It killed your right thigh every time you got in the car. Get the 69 original rubber wheel. Another 67 part used on our car with a shallower "dish" to it. Lou.

Even though my '68 does Not have P/S...I installed a 14" dia. Steering wheel.
I installed a Tilt-Ididit in my '34 street truck, which works perfectly ($450 back in the day).
After 2 spine surgeries I may install a Tilt in the Vette
Edit: I just did a search...prices have remained the same on the paintable tilt columns!

So I'm looking at these columns on ebay and they are anywhere from $180 to $340, depending on if you want it keyed or not. Seems a lot cheaper than the ididit.
Nobody has used one of these?

I cannot speak to the quality of the cheaper Ebay columns. I have used IDidIt in various cars and they never let me down. If I had to guess, the no name brand columns are Chinese products, IditIts are made in Michigan which is likely part of the price disparity. Although I can only imagine the chrome quality on a $169 fully chromed steering column. They may work well, I don't know, but not a part I'd want to fail or to do often because of failure.

I looked at a lot of photos of the ididit columns too (universal is about $336) and I'm convinced Ididit assembles using chinese components lol. But maybe the chinese stuff is just really good copies, who knows.
I guess what I'm looking for here is folks that have used universal columns, what length they felt worked best, what mount, etc. Maybe not many have done that?

Quite possible these days, I know they used to be built in Michigan but who knows now. If it is the case, not all Chinese products are of the same quality so might be worth a second look. . But I digress, I have a universal in mine, I'll look whet I get home at the length. My colums is at least 10yrs old.

If you installed the Borgeson box after, were you able to collapse the steering shaft like an oem steering shaft or did you need to trim the shaft?

I bought the car with the Ididit column. I then installed the Borgeson power steering. The Ididit column doesn't compress. I cut about 2 inches off the column shaft.

I want to order an Ididit for my 73 but was worried about the measurement and if I could just collapse or cut the shaft or if I needed to custom order the shaft length to fit?

I actually wouldn't mind if the column was a hair shorter on the interior side because I think wheel is too close to the driver on these cars anyway. I might order a 28" and see how it works. I can always add to the shaft.

The Borgeson kit comes with the steering box and pump for just under $1000. Not to hard to install and looks good in the car. Not any electric gizmo stuff to hookup to a 55 year old system.
