I bought a hood cable from one of the corvette venders and it was too long. Tried to make it work but it was a no go.....
Ended up buying another from different vender and it fit fine. Not sure where I got them too much time has past. But it is possible the one you got is too long.

I have a '78 undergoing a resto-mod project. I also could not understand why this cable wandered all over the engine compartment. So, right or wrong, this is what I did,,,
I bought the clevis, shoulder screw, and nut from McMaster Carr. Also the vented cap screw which provides an adjustment feature at both ends. Probably could be done more simply, but I always over engineer this stuff, which is why the car isn't finished, and over budget.
