Do you rinse out the oil filter before each re-use?

But how to get those small particles out of the filter element? Cause you know you just have to save the original filter....

Whatever cold or hot makes no difference in the big scheme of things. People worry about things like this, and then only drive the car 300 miles a year.

I change my oil when it is warm. In the grand scheme of things it makes little difference hot or cold. I choose warm so I don't burn myself, it flows out quicker and I leave less residue oil behind. As others have stated, how ever you choose to change your oil, hot or cold, it really doesn't matter, as long as you change it. Happy motoring, Russ

Not to derail this debate but I have seen some videos, some scary, where they either add a liquid detergent or kerosene and run the engine before the oil change to clean out he sludge before an oil change. Thoughts, seems dangerous thinning the oil and running the engine. One individual added four quarts of detergent to one of oil insanity!!!! Opinions? Thanks Ike

Idiotinc thing to do. If you change oil at reasonable intervals, there will be NO sludge build up. If you bought the car with sludge build-up: #1 shame on you for not doing 'due diligence' in your inspection of the car; and #2 once you have sludge, it is best to just begin doing GOOD maintenance, but don't do anything 'unusual' to loosen the sludge. You can easily clog the oil filter and force it to 'bypass' mode which will just circulate that sludge [and whatever is being held by it] throughout the engine/bearings/etc.

Let’s face it. Most of us change the oil way before it has a lot of dirt in it anyway. It gets changed yearly and I’ll bet most (not all) have less than 1500 miles on it. So the little amount of dirt that gets left in the pan or engine is not going to really matter at least in out lifetime. I’ve done it both ways and I can say there is no performance difference. It won’t matter in our lifetime and nobody will measure it.

Yeah it seemed odd diluting your oil like that There were quite a few vidoes about it so I figure it had to be true (joke!!!) These are 50 year old cars so I figure, possibly incorrectly, that there would be some buildup inside the engine and cleaning that out would be beneficial but diluting the oil is not a good thing and not a good way to go. I know that fuel has detergent additives, do oils as well Thanks Ike.

On the few occasions I've purchased a car or bike that had been neglected, I'll change the oil twice; once to get most of the sludge out, and again to get most of the stuff the first change didn't get. Kinda like flushing twice after a chili-fest.

I remember when I was young they would some times add 1 quart of kerosene and let the engine idle for 5 minutes to help loosen up any sludge before draining the oil out. Any one remember Rislone?
Everything else said, we all know that the best way to clean sludge out of an engine is to use Dawn dish soap. Dawn is the best it is eco friendly and real simple to use. Add just a few drops in a gallon of water shake gentry in the engine do not stir.

Same....just enough to be lukewarm. Seems like it drains faster and the filter comes off a little easier. I usually let the oil pan drain with the plug out and the oil filter off for about 1 beer. The beer, however, should be cold so it drains faster too.
