69 Windshiled Lower Crossmember Question
On the 69, windshield lower crossmember, just outside of where the windshield curves up and out, there is a small rectangular raised pad stamped into the crossmember. This pad does not exist on my 77. Can someone tell me what the purpose of this pad is?
My guess is that it is possible a resting point for the wiper door when closed? OR.......is the screw on this pad for a windshield stop? OR,....does the wiper mechanism mount here?

Okay, I found a picture with the pads I am questioning......circled in blue. In these pics, which I got off internet search, it appears the wiper door mechanism has a bracket bolted to the pad, but I still want to know what the purpose of these pads are, as they are more than just a mounting point.

The only thing that touches it is the rear support bracket for the wiper hinge assy. My 69 looks the same as your photo. The bumpers are near the front of the door and rest on the grille when the door is open. It was probably for something that was changed before production and the part tooling was already made.

This is my '71 coupe. It has that bump also. Might be just designed that way for additional stiffness in the center crossmember where it joins to the corner. Mine has a tab on it that the windshield rests on...could that be the reason for the pad?

Ok, so far it appears it has two purposes. One is the wiper mechanism bracket, attached to the pad with that hex head screw. Secondly, I have seen the windshield lower stops on later models, i.e. a 71 (Alan71 pictures). My car does not have a hole to attach that bracket, so maybe 69 did not have it, and it was later added in 70 or 71.

Melting Slicks
There are a number of revisions on the 69.
One problem noticed on the 68 was 'scuttle shake'. The apparent movement of the hood rear edge as the car flexes left and right and up and down.
These are (I believe) part of a system to 'manage' this.
The other much more apparent one is the cross bar braces under the dash.
Unkahal
