Need help, engine stolen
My 77’s original engine was stolen out of my garage Friday night. I know I should know this but where on the block/heads can I find the vin/partial vin so if recovered I can prove it belongs to my car?

Just another Corvette guy
Your partial VIN will be on the stamp pad, front of engine just below passenger side cylinder head.

Get to to the local metal scrap yard quick enough with a police incident report number and you may have a chance of locating it.
Im guessing you left the garage door open overnignt and some turd lurking around looking for anything he can steal and scrap for beer money struck.
Good luck,
Marshal

Fortunately our local scrap yards are closed weekends so I'll be there first thing in the morning. The garage in question is at a rental property and the neighbors garage and mine share a common wall. These dirtbags tore through the wall then forced the door up. It was locked but that didn't matter.

Really sorry this happened. Sad that dirtbags like this create so many issues. Hope you can find it!

I've been a cop for 29 years now. I once suggested we purchase a wood chipper to my Chief.
He kinda looked over his glasses and walked away............what?
I thought it was a good idea. Kinda like take a bite outta crime.
Also check Craigslist market place in the surrounding local.
They ain't bright that's why we catch once in a while.
These turds are usually racooning at night for scrap metal.
An engine block is like the Holy Grail.
PS: police talk to the neighbor whose garage they were in before tearing into the wall?
You think someone heard that?
Keep us posted.

An engine block is not worth as much as you would think to scrap. most places are only paying .06 to .15 cents a pound. a 350 engine might bring you 60.00 to 70.00 dollars. Seems like a lot of trouble for that kind of money.
They didn't take anything else ?

I worked at a car factory....We had employees that were checking out materials and selling them to the local scrap yard.
I would call there first! They took lic. plate pictures of all drop-offs and names and license numbers.
We caught them with $800 worth of aluminum plates. Each were prosecuted and lost their well paying jobs.
Dumb mouth breathers used the 'company flat bed'.
Wood chipper set on idle! (full speed is too good for THEM!)

L46man,
exactly.... my agency arrested a knuckle head pushing a stolen shopping cart full of stolen copper down spouts and gutters off the well to do homes in our district.
It's like entitlement to come onto someone's property while they are away and get a running start and just rip down the entire down spout with the gutter in tow.
Your stealing scrappers are the bottom feeders in the thieving food chain. I had a guy stop and steal a plumbers hand truck with the old water heater still strapped to it just outside of his truck. He just humped up out of the customers basement and returned inside. The funny thing is when I talked to the victim he said I would have given the guy the water heater but I need my hand truck. As a car wrencher, I had no problem with locking him up for stealing a mans tools. I told him that's like asking to bang his wife. I could go on but you get it. I can't make this stuff up.
It sucks the knuckleheads will get 60 bucks as the block is irreplaceable to the original car owner.

Just to update, no leads yet. The neighbor denies any knowledge but he’s lying. They made off with the engine and a new metal shed still in the box from Lowe’s. There’s a tv and dresser missing from the house but they belonged to a former tenant. Fortunately I saved an LQ4 and 4L80e, some other small block parts and 2 sets of rally wheels. The thieves did get noticed so the police have their description and their vehicle. It could have been worse but I hate thieves. Just a group of people with no honor.

I hope you find the motor, that's pretty screwed up that they went to such an effort for the motor. That's a lot of effort to go through for less than a hundred bucks.
Some guys stole the catalytic converter out of my truck one morning, when the tow truck came he said I was the 4th car that morning he towed with a stolen cat and it wasn't even 9 am! And apparently I was luck since they unbolted it from the truck instead of using a sawzall to cut through the header.

I'm guessing the former tenant had some guests over at some point and time and saw your items there in storage or saw it when you were there and had the garage open.
They knew your car so when you were not there it was a safe bet they could get away with the break in.
Just some basic cop hunch.
Time to find a new storage area.
Maybe offer a small reward and some 3rd party crumb will meraciously know where it can be found. No honor among dirt bags.
