BF Goodrich white letters
I am having a set of 255x60x15’s installed on my 1980 Monday. Are the browning of the white letters still a problem?
If so I will have them mounted on the inside.

the set I have is 3 years old. Yes, they still turn color over time.
but I like me some raised white letter ... It's a shame there are so few options in RWL tires.
comet and an SOS pad. works great.

I have them on my 79', and yes they turn brown. In fact, even after scrubbing with the Bleachwhite and SOS pad they still don't look as white as the old days. If I had it to do again, I'd just put the black side out. The tires are only 2 years old.

BFGs have really gone down hill. They're grossly overpriced, and now the lettering turns brown.
I've been buying Cooper Cobras instead. No browning of the letters, and cheaper. It's not like the BFGs are a better performing tire, so why they're so much more is beyond me.

I have the BFG tires on my 73 and also on my FIERO, and yes they do turn brown. I have been using the Bleach White spray from Walmart and it is making the black sidewall look lighter. Buying these tires will go on the Hugh list of mistakes that I have made. Spent more time reading all the posts on getting them white. In defense of Michelin who owns Goodrich, Maybe there is a hazardous chemical that they can’t use for the white letters. I will admit that when I had the clutch replaced, the service Center had the car washed and the tires looked great. When I spoke to the detail guy, as to what product he used, he just smiled, maybe I should tell him to sell the whitener on Shark Tank.

Hey Mark,
Before you take the plunge consider going with Mickey Thompsons. After years of running BFG's I made the switch. They match up on every test, almost identical to the BFG except for the lettering. It stays WHITE. Good quality tire, fair price, great look. I'm not going back.
Cheers, Greg

The repair shop already ordered the BF Goodrich Tires. I am going to have them mounted with the white letters in so I don’t have to deal with the brown letters. I was going to have the shop order the Cooper’s, but he advised against it, as he knew of some that failed.
The tires on the car are 10 years old and like new, but in reading some recent posts about tires failing, I though it best to replace them, especially with how hot the roads are in Florida now.
Thanks everyone for your replies.

Next time I change tires, I am going to try to color my old white letters before they get tossed. Possibly with a big magic marker of some sort, red, blue, gold, see how they look. Maybe like crap, but you never know!

Is there brown dirt on the road? Is it a surprise that WHITE rubber letters/stripes turn brownish over time....if you don't clean them frequently?
I understand that there WAS a problem with letters discoloring some time back and that some folks got replacements or partial refunds for the 'disfunctional' tires. But this "brown letters" deal has been around since white-letter tires came on the market (50 years?). I've never had that problem because I clean my tires every time I wash the car. Now, if I get lucky and have a clear weather streak over several months and only have to 'dust' the car off, the tires can get a little dingy and they will be toward the tan/brownish shade...because they are dirty.
Spray some Bleech-wite on them, scrub with a bristle brush and rinse off. Good for another few months....

The problem tires from BFG will not clean up with bleech white, that is the issue. The tires have a bleed through problem that permanently stains the white lettering brown. All the scrubbing in the world cannot remove it.

Agreed. But one of the forum members here - Jim Jabroni - mentioned naphtha to me. Cheap enough from Home Depot or wherever. I just wipe off the RWLs with the stuff on a rag - only a couple of passes per rag. Then I just wash the car & the tires normally. It really does brighten them up. Better than any cleaning product I've used. No obvious effect on the tire.
But eventually they'll still brown. Just sitting there in the garage. The OP has the right idea, mount the RWLs inside.
A friend has an old set of BFGs on a Challenger - too old actually - but those damned things are snow white. No idea what they changed or why.

Coopers
My Coopers were browning a little on the edges even though they are 2016 versions.
On a whim I tried a little Acetone on a rag. It worked good and brightened them up.

So with the Coopers, and we talking about the dirty letter issue that all RWL tires have, or is it more serve as with the BFG. This is going to suck. I have perfect looking Goodyear Eagles gt's that will need to be replaced, and it appears all the new stuff is junk!

You can still purchase the original style GY Eagle GT tires, but they are very pricey. I love the GY tires and there is NO issue at all with the letters going brown. Are you driving your car with an original set of GT tires that came on the car? How old are they on the date code? I never used MT tires as daily type tire, but I do use MT DRs at the track which are great. I see they want $147 ea for the ST tires which seems like a good price.

I've had the MT's on my '65 for a year and a half now with no sign of browning.
