1978 Indy 500 Decals...but not the same as on my Pace Car
Was wondering if anybody knew anything about these decals, there old new stock...from what I was told they were put on "support cars" at the 1978 Indy 500....what type of cars were they...?? Are they worth anything..??
I have a 1978 corvette...but the decals on my Pace Car are different....
Four Pace Cars were used at the Indy Race as parade lap cars and wore decals somewhat similar to those in your photo. I'm not sure those decals were ever used.. Do you have those...or just photos from the web?
Two of the Pace Cars were VIN 001 and 002, one of which would go the winner Al Unser, and now sits in his race car museum. The other sits in the GM Heritage Center. The two others were coupes with regular # VINs that were backup lap cars, one of which is in the INdy 500 museum. The fourth got lost but last sighting was in Kansas. Yes i have these decals, someone knew I had a Pace Car and said if I wanted them he would send them to me for a couple of dollars, don’t remember how much tho.... I believe the story was he had a relative who worked at the track and got them.
It's my understanding there were about two dozen Pace Cars used for the Indy Festival activities, including the parade down town. Corvette News from that time shows these cars and festival activities.
Back in that era, there were DOZENS of pseudo-Pace Cars used during the month of May at the Indy 500 for V.I.P. guests. These cars probably got different decals placed on them than what was on Corvette "Pace Car" packages. Your decals may be what was placed on Indy 500 "Pace Cars".
