Spare tire carrier color?
Mine has some over spray on it and the metal has surface rust , anybody know what color IS the correct shade and is the metal a different color? I want to paint it.

The earlier C3's had bare fiberglass tubs. Not sure abut the later years' cars. If they are the same, you should use a chemical stripper to remove any paint/coating and use a gel-type rust remover for the steel pieces. That would allow you to prevent any surface damage to the tub.

Here is the spare tire carrier on my 82. The tub is fiberglass and was only cleaned up. I painted the supports black.

The tubs themselves, were always unpainted. 68-72's are black fiberglass, the 73-82's are gray SMC sheet molded compound). The reinforcement "V" is painted semi gloss black, and were painted before being installed on the tub, so the aluminum rivets were unpainted. The rear lock bolt was silver zinc plated and the front hangers were either zinc plated or natural steel finish.

Hi,
And for at least 68-72 tub/carrier for some reason the large flat head rivet wasn't set (bucked) it the typical way.
A tool of some sort was used so that all the 'set side' of the rivets had the same precise form... with a tiny recessed ring around it's circumference.
Regards,
Alan
Sure wish that someone with machining skills would make a 'set' that would duplicate that.

I used paint stripper, along with a lot of brake cleaner to get the 10 coats of paint and undercoating off of mine. Then I shot it will satin clear. The V frame I sandblasted and powdercoated semi gloss black.
