Default Should I keep Original Glass?

Wondering how important it is to keep the original glass in my '69.

The windows have some scratches from the bottom to the top very faint and the windshield has a small scratch down near the cowl. Should I live with it since it is original to the car or should I replace it?

What would you do?

It depends on what you want, a pristine car will need pristie glass, new or used,

If driver, i like history and the scars it leaves,
I would in that case leave it

Really depends on what the car is and what you intend it to be. Is it a driver or a trailer queen?

Also, you can have new made date coded replacement glass ordered.

Keep the windows down. Nobody really expects any 48 year old car to be perfect...and it never will be, no matter how much money you dump into it. Just enjoy driving the darn thing...

Correction - Nobody expecting perfection is not quite correct...I forgot about Alan and his 71...and I really mean that as a compliment.

Yea I am leaning toward leaving it the way it is. The car is a nice driver and not a show car. I love to tinker with my car and always seem to be finding something that could be just a little bit better.

I assume that if I decide to replace it down the road it won't hurt the value to not have original glass.

I don't think it will hurt the resale value at all, and it could be a plus if someone is interested in originality. I still have the original window glass on my car, but the windshield has been replaced. Eventually, I will buy a repop with correct stampings, but it would have been nice to have the original. So I guess it depends on who you end up selling it to but you can't go wrong keeping it original.

My original scratched door windows are in a box in my basement. They look great there.

I just installed my old chipped and scratched door glass. They look a lot better on the car than they did on the bench. I hardly notice it now.

My 72 has the original glass. The windshield has scratches . It has the distortion in the curves that shows it's age. I like it.

If the car is not an NCRS award winner (nor wanting to be one), replace the glass if it is limiting you clear vision. If you change it and you are able to do so without breaking it, keep the old glass intact and sell it to someone who does want to go for NCRS awards.

From the OP, I was under the impression that the scratches were minimal and did not inhibit vision. If it causes safety issues, no one should use it. I thought my drivers side window on my car was scratched. I polished it with some glass stuff and it turned out the streaks were not scratches at all but rather just oil or something. Now my window is clear as a bell.

I took the op the same way, i was just surprized that 71s post lead me to believe ncrs guys actually want scratched chipped or even visibility impaired glass, i guess its a little left of the dial to the ops question,
Just most all ncrs cars i have seen are rather pristine, including the glass, admitted ncrs is something i have limited knowledge about,

I put a new windshield on my 74. I havent gotten to the doors or rear yet, but i will eventually. It will have new paint, and the contrast created by new paint makes old glass looking glaringly obvious. (Pun intended). I'm ok with new glass. Btw, date coded glass is something like 50% more expensive.

I don't know how many folks might want an original (factory) piece of glass. Keep in mind that most of the 'award' seekers do not really drive their cars that much.

My thought was that IF you can save the old glass, it might have some value. If you just break it up removing it, the glass will have NO value.

So, maybe a "survivor" car would need it. No, it didn't come on THAT car. But, when did that ever bother NCRS....
