Default 69 LT1 BB hood on my 72....hood support help needed

I'm putting a 69 LT1 hood on my 72. They have a different hood support mechanism and the 69 has a different mounting location on the car body than the 72.

Will the 69 mechanism work or do I need to come up with a custom support?

I'd also like to see some custom support options.....so let's see them.

Hi CW,
I believe that there were 6 different hood supports used during 68-82 production.
It appears though that the same support was used for the 69-71 production. The 72 as you note is different. It appears the difference may be that the 69-71 support 'telescopes' while the 72 support' folds'.
There doesn't seem to be a difference between the support used on a bb hood versus a sb hood.
It seems like a 69-71 will be the best one for your 69 bb hood…. depending on how it mounts to the hood surround and apron compared to the 72 support.
???
Regards,
Alan

Alan

It's the mounting location on the car, not the hood that concerns me. The hood has a different mounting position, but same design. It's about 4 inches higher.

When I looked at how it attaches to the car, the bracket looks entirely different. It looks like it mounts to the wheel well (similar to a C2).

Hi CW,
Here's the 71 style mount.
2 bolts through the apron into to weld nuts on the core support bracket in the wheel well and 1 bolt through the hood surround gutter.
Regards,
Alan

That pic confirms it won't work for me.

So with that said, I need custom hood support pics!!!!

I would keep that hood, not many 69 LT-1 hoods around

Werner, you have a similar situation to mine, my '72 base car also has a transplanted BB/LT-1 hood. I believe it was transplanted from a 72 Ontario Orange LT-1, because there is no evidence of holes for the engine size number callout, and the location of the support bolt holes on the hood.

The 72 support is a scissor style design. I have seen on another C3 where they took the 72 style scissor support, cut it on the upper part and weld in another piece of steel to extend the supports reach. I believe the mounting holes on the 69 BB hood are higher up on the hood. So the 72 style support needs to be modded and this is what they did to mount an earlier hood.

The distance on my hood from the upper bolt on the hinge (looking at Alan's pic) to the lower bolt hole for the support on my hood is about 8.5".

Is your distance greater?

Yeah, but no demand--no 69 lt-1s looking for it!

I took another closer look at the mounting. I'm now starting to believe I've been wrong from the start. The pic looks like the same mounting location that I have and should work.

Who has a 69-71 LT1/BB hood mounted to a 72, and did you use the LT1 bracket for your hood support?

there is no difference in the LT1, BB, or regular hood prop rod. 68-71 all the same.
I believe 72 changed to the folding prop.

Werner, if you indeed have a 69 BB hood. As mentioned 69-71 support should work. 68 and 72 supports are different and 72 mount location is different as well I believe. Vendor sites should have pics of the different supports. See what works.

They never made a LT-1 in 1969. Only 427 hoods with the 427 holes on each side.

I believe 72 changed to the folding prop.
Were there any instances that a 72 style support was used on any 71 Corvette hoods or do I have a 1972 hood on my 1971 Corvette?

mounting dimensions did not change on any of the hardware with the short hood.
i suggest you take pictures of your hood, you are using and support if you have 1.
you have not stated hood details, short version ?

For my 72 lt1 hood, distance from the upper hinge bolt to the lower support bolt hole is 8.5" I'm using the 72 scissor style hood support
