Default 1981 sat a for a year or so

I picked this car up, filled with premium gas when I stepped on it the check engine light came on. When I let off the light goes out. The check engine light only comes on when I get on the gas hard.

I suspect the computer is either getting a timing anomaly or a bad air/fuel mixture reading when accelerating. You indicate the car sat for a year. Did you change plugs/wires and are you running fresh fuel?

I agree...with the 'CHECK ENGINE ' light being on..there is a trouble code stored that you can read and see what it is...and I would bet that it has to do with air/fuel mixture.

I changed the computer and had the carb rebuilt. sorry about getting back so late, still getting used to how this hole forum thing works. but really seems helpful, and thanks for the input, didn't think about the plugs and wires.

you are right, about 25 codes, ended up just changing out the computer. rebuilding the carb helped, getting there. what octane you guys recommend? just filled last night and checked mpg and with 93 I got 14 mpg. Not sure but doesn't seem to good to me. may need a trip back to the "Vett" doctor.

I run mine with 89 just fine. 14 mpg is pretty good considering it is a car with a 4BBL carb and not fuel injected. you cannot compare these cars to modern day cars.

Shouldn't need premium fuel. The L81 is a pretty low compression motor.

Post the codes that you're getting now. The computer system on these work very well as long as everything is functioning properly.

The computer was changed out so I cant post the codes, The engine light no longer comes on. Good to hear about the fuel, I know nothing about these engines but I'm learning. It's all stock, hard to even see the plug wires, plastic cover over the distributer cap. I was wanting to look at the benefit's of getting more air in sometime, and getting rid of those two big snorkels coming off the air cleaner! I had the carb rebuilt and added some flow masters. Thanks for the help, I'm getting better little by little.

Tune up...... set ignition timing to 12 degrees instead of 6
Should get near 18 - 20 mpg
