How do you title a body?

Hi,
There was a thread about something 'similar' to this on the NCRS Discussion Board recently.
Is a VIN tag, a trim tag, a frame, and an engine block, from a TOTALLY burned car, still a car?
What makes a car a car?
Regards,
Alan

I guess the part that the VIN is attached to is the "car". Like when people "re-body" 69 Camaros with those new bodys all they need is part of the cowel for it still to be the same car???

Lots of Corvettes running around out there with replaced frames due to rust or damage, that do not have a VIN that matches the body. Its rarely checked by DMVs or buyers. What VIN is checked? The one on the windshield post.

I don't think this is as odd as it appears on the surface.

The seller probably had a car he liked, with a rusted frame. Swapped the 74 frame under his car, and used whatever other 74 parts on his car, that were better than his existing ones. Now he's selling off what he has left over from the 74.

$500 for a Corvette body and VIN, is pretty fair. If I had a 74 with a bad cage, or a really rough body, I wouldn't have a problem with replacing the bad body with a better one, and using the new bodies VIN. It's a lot better than illegally transferring a VIN tag, to a different body.

Of course, if you were a nefarious person, $500 for a body, VIN tag and title, is a cheap way to make a stolen car legal, too.

It would also depend on the laws of the state. My state didn't title cars until 1975, and now will not title cars older than 35 years. You just get a bill of sale and the VIN tag # is used.

It seems to depend on the future value of the car. I saw a program many years ago where they pulled a wrecked and rusted out chassis out of a farm field, invested over $100K in reproduction parts (all sheet metal was replaced), and were proud to display a "completely restored" Plymouth Superbird! The only things reused were the VIN and title and they sold it at B-J as a restored car! I have even seen it done with written off heavy trucks; all we have a title to is the VIN plate!!

Someone will buy it for the title and another 75 coupe will be stolen and retagged as a restored car!!

My 69 is getting a 68 frame under it, and the body birdcage that was on my 68 chassis is going to be a car again someday and in a wild twist of irony that 68 body might be on top of my old 69 frame...

The threads ad,
Sure it's a vette it's even got a VIN, while to me it's basket case or good for parts, but like we been spewing in other threads someone might try to build a car from it...
