What do you guys think of this 71
I am bidding on this car on ebay. I would like to hear some of the more experienced guy's thoughts on this car. Does it look ok? Any red flags. I appreciate it when the more learned guys either pick it apart or give it a positive review. thanks again.

From the pictures the car looks quite good. It would be very helpful to see it in person to look at the problem Corvette areas. The included documentation is a big plus, in my mind. That mileage on the odometer may be right or may not. If everything but the clock works that is great. The clock is a common problem and not a big deal. Mine is broken on my 77 and I don't fix it just because of the amount it drains the battery.

After what I got in with my 69, not that I woudnt still buy my 69, I simply couldnt afford a restored car.
The whole hidden rust thing really gets to me, things can look good from one angle and be all messed up from another, some things can't be seen on a complete car,
I sure will never buy another car with out going and seeing it or hiring a very savvy person to check it out,
To me this car is up there in pricing for what options etc it has but I could be wrong there....

Easy Mike, the beauty of the term "bidding" is that it's not the same as "bought". I figured the final price I am willing to pay could be affected by some wise eyes. Just makin a plan for the end of the auction.

I saw that but it looked so much better than mine,
That triangle fiberglass that hold the upper back of the fender where those rivet to the birdcage love to leak and rust.....
From my 81, but I have seen these that all that was there was a rusted out hole but the car looked great....

Drifting
According to the protecto plate it was bought and registered in Michigan. I looked at quite a few cars that spent their lives in the Midwest and the vast majority had rust issues on the frame and birdcage. However if this car was never driven in the snow and exposed to road salt, rust may not be a big issue with this car. The rust on the door pillar is a concern, but the one frame picture in the Ad doesn't look bad. The frame end cap looks solid. If it were me bidding, I'd ask the seller for more frame pictures and some pictures of the windshield frame (particularly of the driver side above the rusty door pillar).

Hi e401,
The hinge pillar area on cars like this were very ugly originally and got even uglier as the years went by. I'd rather see the ugliness than see an attempt by someone to smooth things out and disguise the truth.
There's really not enough information in the pictures to form much of an opinion from.
The engine compartment and interior pictures show a pretty untouched car which agrees with the sellers description.
The question about the rust situation is one that needs to be settled to your satisfaction. A personal inspection would put that matter to rest pretty quickly. The single frame picture looks nice.
What are your plans for a car like this…. how will you use it.
If it's not rusty the price really shouldn't go too much, or any, higher. If it's rusty it's already way too high.
Regards,
Alan

Le Mans Master
I would start by asking him to remove the kick panels and take some clear pictures. If its leaking and rusting in the windshield frame , there is probably evidence in the kick panel area around the #2 body mount bolt. If it looks good in that area then it's probably ok.

Looks like a nice, well documented, unmolested car. Options wise, its not bad but not great, lots of comfort options but not alot of performance options. Cool color and looks to be in good shape. I wouldnt mind owning it, if it is as original as it looks Id expect it to go for somewhere slightly south of 20k.

alan 71 ,my use for it would be just to drive around the desert here, take 1 day road trips etc. Do some decent short trips. I really like original cars, I am in Phoenix, so I am kind of spoiled rust wise. Maybe I could talk to the seller and see if he could take a couple of more pics for me. I can't see myself getting to Illinois to take a first hand look. I do like the color/interior combo, and the lack of performance options doesn't bother me much. Makes it a nicer high speed cruiser. Thanks for the replies so far. This is the kind of stuff I learn from.

Hi e,
For this car to be a 'dependable' driver it will likely take some work.
My bet is it hasn't been driven much recently and so when you begin to drive it regularly things will pop up.
Besides having all the fluids changed and the engine tuned up right away I'm thinking that things like the water pump, fuel pump, carb, etc. will begin to need attention.
Since the car appears quite unmolested at least you won't have to figure out just what this mixed batch of parts are.
I guess I'm saying you'll need to assume you'll spend some additional money right away once it's yours, and also as you drive it for a while.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
For an 'originality' guy like me the engine compartment shows some VERY nice parts and details!
