Knock off wheel caps: win, fail, or ho-hum?
I've never been able to decide if I like this look or not. Seems kind of cheesy, but some seem to better executed than others.....
Comments?
(Sorry, couldn't find a C3 pic and no, it's not my car).

I've seen there are some knock off cap kits that hide the wheel nuts to make them look more authentic.

On the flip side it's not that hard to run real knock off wheels. I've used some adapters on the wheel hubs on my Cobra to run pin drive knock off wheels.
These are a 17x11" 3 piece Halibrand style wheel. The spinners are forged aluminum and you use a lead mallet to tighten and loosen them.
A few wheel maufacturers will machine the centers to suit the adapters or can supply wheels and adapters.
I also picked up some hex nuts and machined up a socket to suit them. This makes for a different look.
Cheers
Mike

I think 'spinners' and the "mags" look a little dated. But, that's just my take. As it sits, still a beautiful car...

They are not my cup of tea, I like the flat machined plate cover for the Torq Thrusts.

Those look like American Racing (AR) Carlisle spinners. I had them on my 1967 years ago. I found them rather large for the wheel and went back to AR stock caps after a year or so.

Anyway, there were a couple of occasions when I had to pull out the trusty lead hammer and pull one of those wheels. I can tell you from personal experience, that a larger spinner as you have on your car or the pictured one would have been a blessing...not only for having a bigger target to hit, but also for leverage if the spinner was on there really tight.
The spinners on your car and the ones I posted seem to me patterned after the 60s GS Corvette wheels, or maybe the current crop of Cobra wheels, and I've always believed that especially in a racing situation, you'd want to get the spinners off quickly, and size matters.
I really like the size of the larger spinners, and was one reason I was getting mildly interested in them. The car I posted was in the gallery of Vintage Wheel Works.

Fly,
Thanks for that pic! I loved those XKEs.
Brings back memories of a different time. I have often wondered where Dead Man's Curve is.

Hi Paul,
I think almost everyone's hometown or at least a town nearby has a 'dead man's curve'.!
That's why the song struck a chord with so many guys.
Regards,
Alan

Yes, I know a curve locally that meets the criterion. Especially in winter. I drive it every day. The roadway leans outwards (why?) to a concrete barrier. Hit that too fast in freezing rain and you are really in trouble.

The song refers to Sunset & Vine. I traced that years ago to Hollywood, CA. But it is in the middle of $M condo territory. Perhaps it wasn't in 1962 or so.

Sorry, back on topic. I like the look of the spiiners on the Halibrand/clones style wheels in the pic not so much on other styles.

CSX66, what particular nuts did you work to fit with your knock off adapters? ...and do you have "safety pins"?

Acccording to the Jan Berry and Roger Christian the curve was on Sunset Blvd by Drake Stadium which is east of the well known streets written into the song. The curve was lessened somewhat in the '60's after quite a few accidents had occred there. Have driven it many times, and no it's not the same place where Jan had his near fatal accident. That happened on a side street. Driven that road numerous times then up through the canyons.

On my 1967 this is what I eventually ended up with after six years. And yes, that is a pic from the day it was loaded for shipment to Illinois. I have fond memories of that car.
