Default speaker wiring

I have a 79 and I would like to have an idea of the speaker wire colors before I start replacing things. I can find the front, but in the back all I have is wires. any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have the optional rear speaker set up in your 79 RPO U81? IIRC, the stock wiring was blues (+) and blacks (-).

Hi Easy Mike. What I have is a green & green w/black and gray & gray w/black . I'm assuming the stripe is (-). Do I have that right ? Thanks, Jon

the rear speaker option is RPO code U81. If your car wasn't ordered with it, then you don't have wiring going to the rear.

IIRC stands for If I remember correctly

If your car has factory rear speakers, the colors you found may be correct. I was simply recalling what the colors are in my 80. Do you have the 79 assembly instruction manual (AIM)? The AIM shows the installation of the rear speakers and the wiring.

In either event, the green wire is (+) and the green/black is (-) for one of the speakers; gray (+) and gray/black (-) for the other. That seems to be a common convention for [modern] rear speaker wiring. That might indicate that your rear speakers & wiring were added later by a car radio shop.

Thank you, you have answered my question. I thought the striped wire was negative by that was just a guess. Thanks again, I will have tunes with-in the hour! Have a great day!
Jon
