Is it safe to run a car on jack stands
I have my 75 on jack stands. I'm doing some work with the car in the air(painting the frame, brakes, dual exhaust) Just checking if its safe to run the engine.

Burning Brakes
The right answer is NO!
I'm sure people have done it, but that doesn't make it a smart or safe thing to do.
Car vibrates/falls off of stands, plows thru your wall..things get ugly in a hurry.

Waaay too many variables for anyone to say... SURE, do it! Lol.
Condition of jack stands, condition of ground surface they're standing on , what locations they are at under the car, what you're planning to do... If there's room, or perhaps you can add straps to help keep it in one place forward/aft... Such as in a setup where it's on a car trailer, on jacks, then strapped with 4 tight straps, 2 front-2 rear... Then I would say your chances would be better... But I can't imagine there's anything you'd 'want' to check by running the engine on jack stands...
From my point of view... My car rumbles and shakes pretty good at a stop light sitting on the tires... And that could/would cause it to slip off jack stands just at an idle... So... I personally wouldn't recommend it... It may work once or a few times.. But the one time it doesn't, holds too many bad consequences IMO.

Seen this done once in High school auto shop some 40 years ago, 55 Chevy with 283, jackstands on highest pin, kid started it up and put it in gear to see how fast he could get it....Teacher came out of his skin, totally freaking out! Luckily nothing happened, but the potential could have been a disaster!! "don't do it Man!!" ...that class was never dull.

Safety Car
idleing a car in neutral or park is OK.. but never crawl under a running car anyway.
never put the corvette in gear while the weight if off the rear wheels. the independent rear suspension may bind and break something due to the excessive angle that the half shaft u-joints have to work.

Lots of variables here! Been done countless times with no issues. Proper stands, good surface, engage brain, no problem. If unsure then absolutely NOT. We use to warm our stock car up on stands before practice or the races with absolutely no worries or problems. Good rule to use is if you are unsure or it doesn't feel right then DON'T DO IT!
