Default 68 BB Hood Scoop ?

Ok I want to get rid of this old cracked up ugly hood scoop that is currently on my 68 BB Vert in the pics.

My current thoughts are on these two hood scoops. Either the 1967 427 scoop (AKA Baldwin Motion) http://www.up22.com/scoopw1.htm#SC-104 or the Ford Thunderbolt reverse teardrop http://www.up22.com/scoopw1.htm#SC-101 because it looks like a stingray. What are your thoughts?

Did the PO cut a hole in your stock hood? If the scoop is only bonded on, you might be able to remove it and go back to the stock BB hood.

Yes the stock hood was cut to allow for a high rise intake and 4 barrel instead of the 3x2. I have the original 3x2 intake and carbs but cant afford to rebuild them and don't know if i want to. I really don't want to do a replacement L88 hood since everyone has them. I don't mind being a little different but I don't like the current one.

I have to say your description is very accurate . I am with Mike I would cut the bubble off and glass in the hole.

Hi 68,
I certainly think the original BB hood would look best.
If you're going to do the 'Motion' stripe then the Motion hood would look good.
The 'Thunderbolt' tear drop would be such a distant third choice it's not even on this planet.
Regards,
Alan

I just wonder how this motor would run with a low profile single plane intake and reuse my current 4 barrel, which would be my cheapest route at this point to go back to the original BB hood. I am on a limited budget at this point but I agree the BB hood is sexy and whats under it likes to roar.

Pic of the current intake / carb set up.

Hi 68,
The air cleaner appears to be really up there!
Certainly a drop-base air cleaner will subtract a couple of inches from the tower you have now.
Regards,
Alan

The rubber fuel line is not a good situation.

I love the look of the stock BB hood. I would change the intake or air cleaner (drop base) and fix the hood.

When it comes to drop base air cleaners etc. I have no cue on the subject. Please be mindful that I am currently on a very limited budget at the moment but very open to the correct fix. It is easier for me if someone can essentially give me a parts list or visuals.

I know the rubber fuel line is not ideal but is only temporary until I have the time to bend some new metal lines and install a metal filter. I did this to get her running after 20 years and wanted the clear filter to be able to monitor the fuel system ( looks like i get her clean though).

I do not mind changing the intake but curious what to buy afford ably. Still saving to rebuild the 3x2 and buy the outrageous $400 + dollar air cleaner.

I do not know much about your car but if I had a 68 BB Convertible I would be working towards getting it closer to "correct". Those are just my thoughts. When I got my car it was full of all kinds of incorrect parts from aftermarket to other years. I sold those incorrect parts (often times for more) to buy the correct parts. It was (is) like a treasure hunt as I was on a very tight budget as well. Know the value of parts and wait for the right deal to come along.

There quite a bit missing to make it correct and I am not even interested in trying to make a "numbers matching" car at this point. I am keeping any and all components that I have replaced that are original.

Trying to find correct dated parts for an early 68 (Nov 1967) is dam near impossible and if you do find one part the seller bends you over the barrel twice.

I would like to be able to figure out how to use a drop air cleaner and get rid of the scoop all together and that way once I get the 3x2 rebuild I can just swap them out but with that being said I want to drive this thing until then.

I was not being offensive and I am being mindful to keeping it original but that is all in time.

Better photo of progress under the hood.

You are kind of between a rock and a hard place. The intake and carb you have now won't work with a stock hood. The carb you have won't work with a stock drop base air cleaner. The 3x2 setup you have needs a rebuild and some expensive parts. It would be a shame to do it all twice but I guess you will have to decide which way you are going to go if you want to keep on some sort of budget. I would be working on getting that 3x2 setup going with a stock hood but that's just me...

What intake & carb is on there currently? Looks like an Edelbrock carb? The air filter appears to be a small diameter, 9" or so? I'd look for a 14" drop base air cleaner that will work with the existing carb. Then decide on the hood based on what will fit.

I run a Holley street dominator intake with the original Q jet with a 14" drop base air cleaner under the stock BB hood.

This one is a 1.5" drop, base only.

The intake is off a 70 Chevelle 454 LS 6 and the carb is an Edelbrock I picked up for $100 still in the box

Does this seem like a good price for a original style drop base?

Is this a rectangular port or an oval port engine?
