Sunray DX L-88 tribute
Well it's finally finished (almost....................just got a few trim items to put on and get it aligned). Some of you may have kept up with this build from about a year and a half ago when Stan (http://www.2ndgenrestorations.com/ro...redvettes.html)
was putting this car together for me. But wait, perhaps we should go back to the very beginning when Stan bought the car for himself and the work he did in building it to be his own personal car. Open the following thread (not for the faint of heart )
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...e-read-on.html
I had just sold the #2 car that was Stan's very first build of a road race tribute car and when I told him it was gone, he "enticed" me to go for another of his super car builds so I did. Check out this thread for the "next step" in this mystery build.

So, without further ado...............................here is the final product. As with all of Stan's cars the paint and body work are beyond outstanding. I brought the car home and did the engine install and interior and all the mechanicals over the past year as my time permitted. I'm quite pleased with the end result. Thanks Stan for all your help in getting the body and paint perfect. We tried to build it as close to the original car as we could, working strictly from photographs.
This is where the car started when Stan purchased it several years ago:
And here it is today........................ Yes, it's the same car..................55K original miles.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, Stan does some excellent work and he is a great guy to work with too. I'll post pics of the engine later. It's a 427 +.060, solid lift cam similar to the L-88, 780 Holley, MSD ignition and my reproduction Bill Thomas headers. Car was born a big block and it still has the original trans and 3.70 rear. Hoping to take it to Mecum auction in Indy next month.

Question about when the real Sunray DX was found
I am just starting to research the original race car, I understand Sunray sold it because they had a '68 coming in. I was wondering what the price was that it was sold for (maybe from an old classified ad) to the first couple of fellows who bought it back back in '67 or '68. I don't care about its modern value now that it's restored, just how cheaply one could have bought it then if they would have realized--hey new body style coming out in '68 obviously they are not going to race last year's body style....

However, I hate to see you go through the hassle of going to the Mecum Auction. Rather than that, why don't you just ship it directly to me. I promise to give it a clean garage stall of its own and all the love it can handle. We can even write up an agreement giving you visitation rights- with free beer. How about it?

Our 427s have a few similarities. I'm sure it's going to be nasty.

I have a thing for the C3 road race cars. I love it. Another great build by a guy that delivers on what he's hired to do.
That looks great Rex. Congratulations!

Thanks to each of you for the kind words. They always mean more when they come from guys who know and appreciate these cars like you guys do.
I found a You Tube video of the 1968 Sebring 12 hour race. There is a brief snippet at the 2 minute mark with the original Sunray DX 68 Corvette pictured................................ ....

Terrorizing Orange Cones
Love the way that turned out but then hey... Stan and crew worked their magic and so, the car is a beaut.
I'm another fan of the road-race look that these monsters left imprinted on minds, young and old.
Congrats.
