Default Once upon a Carburetor Rebuild Story!

It's short storytime everyone! Gather around in a circle!!!!!

Once upon a time I found my dream corvette. A 1971 454 factory Mille Miglia red corvette.

In this corvette lives a 1970 LS-5 carburetor.

This little red corvette missed her correctly dated 7041205 carburetor. Her owner wanted to please her and find the correct carburetor. After being told this is an extremely tough one to find I found this one in the first days I looked. It was in rough shape. A nicely dated 7041205 carburetor.

After speaking with various carburetor builders and working with a very understanding seller I purchased the carburetor and sent it out for rebuilding.

To make a long story short. I started with this:

and on my doorstep tonight I ended with this!!!!!

THE END!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!!!!! I boxed it up and put it in safekeeping for now.

I also scored on a intake manifold on yesterdat that appears to have been built nearly the same time as the carburetor. But boy does it look greasy and oily. Needs a major cleanup but I got advice that it may always be best to get the dirty and messy items rather than the cleaned up ones because you can have the rebuilding/clean up done properly.

I hope the intake turns out as nice as this carb. It is being shipped out today to the machine shop to get a nice bubble bath!

Keep it boxed up.. You can't do that. You need to get that baby on there.. I thought I would give you a little crap after doing it to me when you asked me where I had mine...

Oh I hope to not have it boxed up for long!

UNLESS-is installation as easy as replacing a radiator cap????

I figure I would have the install at the same time as the intake and have it tuned up then. I was told it doesn't matter when to put it in but I think it would be just easier to do that. Plus I do like to look at it and show it off for awhile.

You should have sold me yours when I offerred to buy it. You could have made some big $$$$ but I ended up with a nice savings and it was fun to hunt this one and bring it back to life again. Yeah I did give you $hit for keeping it in the box. HAHAHAHA!!!!

What good is it in a box?!?

That's like being married to Sofía Vergara and not taking her out for the occasional test drive.

I got a bunch of parts coming in and want to do a lot of it in one shot. No need to have it out in the open so someone who is in the house starts playing with it and taking it apart.

Unless this is an easy install I would put it in, but I have zero experience in installing a carburetor. No need for a loud BOOM in the neighborhood.

Marc,
What carb do you have on there now? If you have a Q-Jet, it should be a direct swap, 4 nuts at the carb base, throttle cable, I think you have a couple of electical connection if you have the same carb but wrong date stamp, and the fuel line. Should be an 1.5 hour job at the most. I wish I was home to help you. Bring the Red Dragon up to Orlando Friday or Sat night throw a couple of Rib eyes on the grill, (I don't know maybe you eat Tofu and drink near-beer, just kidding). Put the Carb on, get it dialed in. Go for a cruise to Old Town,

I know you can't wait that long, I know I couldn't. But the invite is still open when I get back. TTYL

Hey there! The carb I have on my car currently belongs on a 1970 LS5 car. I am sure to the experienced it is an easy swab. But these parts are all new to me so will need an expert to take care of this.

Thanks for the offer. I think the next time I bring the car all the way up there is for a meet in Kissimmee. Sounds fun though....but at any rate we are still going to have a pizza party for your homecoming!

Once the swap is completed the carb belongs in a 1970. That time is TBD. It is also my insurance policy to recoup some $$$$ from this adventure. I think someone will help me collect.

Wow- that was some serious corrosion! How does the external condition of your new carb compare to the existing one?

Thinking of condition deducts during judging.

Well, I can say there is no way the 1970 carb in the car was EVER as corroded as the 1971 carb. However, to my eyes the 1971 restored one looks better than the one in the car.

All I know is that I am extremely delighted that I have a correct carburetor for my car. Although I was very fortunate to find one in short order that does not have any excuses with its stamping, I like the originality factory look.
