4" backspace vs 4.5" backspace

So it's safe to say the higher the number on the backspacing the closer the wheel / tire will be to the inside of the frame / wheel well?
I'm seeing some wheels 18x8" with 4.25" back spacing.
What are your thoughts with this spacing for the front?
I'm considering 245's all around.
Thanks.

Love the stance of your Vette, what sizes are your tires and does it rub at all?
I just bought some 18x8 & 18x9 US Mags for my 75, off the top of my head I can't remember the offsets though. It looks like there is still space for 1" spacers in front for sure.

I tried some 7" 74 Chevelle rally wheels on my 69. They are 15x7with 4.25" backspacing and come within a quarter inch of the lower spring in the rear. I guess that would be why C3's in 7 and 8 inch came with 4 inch backspacing. They might also come through the top of the inside fender well on a hard curve which is pretty close to the back of your head....
What is stock c3 backspace? did it change during the c3 run?
MY NUMBER ONE design/engineering requirement is that the wheel centerline remain as per stock, so if you have say an 8" wheel, and it was stock, like on my '72.....the width increased by 1.5" when I went to '89+ C4 wheels.....the overall tire DIAMETER remained the same as was stock tires.....
NOW, that divides out to 3/4" increase in width per side, and so to move the ebrake from behind the tire.....relocate that bracket, I find I have almost no more room to be against the sway bar.....
I limited the steering radius in front to keep tires from rubbing frame....added a bolt/nut/washer/spacer to the lower rear rub pad on the A arms....
but the salient point IS, to keep the same wheel/tire center line or you will be straining the rear suspension, and front also, anything from bearings on to bushings.....not such an issue with a solid axle say link in an old GOAT, truck some such.....in the REAR that is.....

the 69 I have now will start with 10" in the rear and then I will go to 11" and the thing that will never cross my mind is bearing or bushing wear....

Stock backspace for 8" wheels is 4". I have a rally wheel that actually measures 3-15/16". Not sure what the 7" rallys from '68 are.

That 42 car in your avatar is pretty darn sweet..
If you can at your leisure I would love to have pictures of it,

BTW what size are the wheels and tires on it?
So 4" or 3. something is a winner, I am running L-88 flares too and I like the deep dish off set thing...I like old school 15" but with lack of wide 15" tires I might have to **** and moan and go to 18"
I liked these wheels from the c2 grandsport but I don't think they make 18" x 10 or better,

Less backspace means the wheels sit further out; if there are clearance issues to the end of the spring with 4.25" then 4" would gain you 0.25" more clearance.
Lots of stressers here, I had a real duh moment there, as I thought about it later I wondered wth did I post that I knew the way bs works, but my mind has been getting real bassackwards lately...should get better when my car gets home and a few other things...
