Default Carpet Question

As there's a carpet sale this weekend, I'm looking to replace mine. What's the difference between "80/20" carpet and the "Pile Carpet"? Does one wear/install easier then the other?

Your 76 probably had cut pile carpet. The fuzzy stuff. Earlier cars had the 80/20 loop pile. The fuzzy stuff does not seem to hold up as well but its what the General used in them. For an occasional driver it is fine. For a daily driver, make sure you use good mats or you will wear a spot in it quicker than you think.

Loop carpet 80/20 came with the standard interior (vinyl seats). Cut pile came with the upgraded leather interior. Regardless, I like the look of the 80/20 better.

The easiest way to tell.... Do you have carpet on your door panels. All deluxe interior cars had carpet on the door panels and they also had cutpile carpet, leather seat covers and smooth visors.

Standard cars.. had vinyl seat covers, textured (comfortweave) visors, and 80/20 loop carpet without out carpet on the door panels..

I like the 80/20 also, do they make it for my '81, or am I stuck with the cut pile because that's all that was available that year?

"Cut-pile" carpeting is the same carpet with the tops of the carpet tufts cut off. Cut-pile carpeting looks smoother and more luxurious. But, you have to vacuum/clean it more often, as it tends to 'brush' the dirt off your shoe bottoms. Cut-pile also shows the dirt more than loop-pile carpet (IMO). I also think 80/20 loop pile wears better and longer.

The cut pile is the higher end carpet. It's also a bit easier to work with even though they are both molded. Someone already mentioned the need for good floormats. That should go without saying no matter which carpet you choose. With cut pile, it tends to mat down more than 80/20 on high usage areas making the mats a must!

ACC used to offer this for the 78-82 cars. But.. The colors on the cut pile differ from that of the loop and on some years and colors it lead to some issues with the binding and edging. I'm not sure what lead to the demise of this but ACC stopped the option a few years ago.
