Physically, not much difference between the two. If memory serves, the 68-69 consoles are a bit different because of how they were upholstered. Later year consoles have less padding under the vinyl.

Contact the seller in Florida and have him/her send you pics of the 69 console. Compare it to your 71 console.

The difference is where the console meets the lower dash pads.

70 & earlier. Lower dash pads come down lower to meet the console.

71 & later. Console comes up higher to meet the dash pads.

Thanks Mike, it was difficult to find nice close up photos to show the difference and get the point across.
I cropped the 70 & earlier one to avoid confusion because it was actually from a corvette that was converted to right hand drive.

Hi,
As qtlw's pictures show there was no means used to line up the bottom corners of the lower dash pads with the upper corners of the shifter console in the early years.
The console was redesigned to include very small 'tabs' that fit into very small 'slots' in the redesigned lower dash pads. This ensured the pieces lined up.
Note, the detail of the double row of stitching on the shifter console and lower dash pads was added too.
Regards,
Alan

Here's a picture that just barely shows one of the 'tabs'.

If the console in Florida does not work out, Wilcox Corvette, Corvette Mods, and Ecklers have great deals on the 1971 Corvette shifter console.

Interesting, never knew that. The tabs on the lower dash of my 70 don't line up well with the console, they bow outward a bit. Sounds like this was a common issue, hence the addition of the tabs?

Hi bb,
Yes, I think the tabs help the alignment of the 3 pieces quite a bit.

So here's how it went down, my brother was at the swap meet in Daytona, I said that if he ran into a good console to pick it up as mine is trashed, sun heat age and looks like abuse thrown in for good measure. Anyway he and apparently I were not aware of the finer details of the Corvette console, I consider myself schooled!

Thank you Gentlemen.

Dave

Oh, so just so I know $20. was a good price for a 69 leMans blue console in excellent condition?

Yep. Post it in the For Sale section....or hold on to it for your future '69.
