Default Gas Tank and Leak Issues on 1976

1976 Vette:
With the help of my mechanic friend we traced an issue Im having with leaking gas onto my muffler, to above the gas tank. We're not quite sure up there what's the problem (the car only has a gallon of gas in it). The gas gauge is not working correctly either.

Anyway I found a new gas tank and sending unit on craigslist. It reads as follows: "Tank is a new aftermarket, had it in the car about 6 months, going to fuel injection so i dont need this one. Does not have a bladder in it. Pickup included. I might have a few tank straps you can have also."

Is the tank supposed have a bladder? If so, can I put one in? Is it worth it? He wants $75 and its a bit of a drive. Please inform me on the bladder issue. I assume replacing this whole thing will solve my leak problem?
Thanks Steve

My '77 has a bladder in the tank. You can not get a replacement tank with the bladder. Leak may be from rotted fuel lines. Gas gauge problem can be from the sending unit to wiring to the gauge or gauge resistor. mike...

Coming from the top its most likely bad hose and or connection. I wouldn't buy a new tank. You need a bladder for safety reasons.

Default 76 gas leak

Yeah when I had my 76 I had a leak and it came from a short piece of hose that rotted . It was located passenger side rear way up under the side area over the muffler. Get down and reach way up youll feel it. Had to drop tank to fix.
might this be the problem good luck

with a properly positioned inspection mirror you will be able to view the top of the tank.you do have to be gumby to accomplish this.good luck.

Thanks everyone.
I don't make a good Gumby at all.
I did purchase the tank, straps, cap, filler bib, hoses and sending unit for $75. I really could not go wrong… all less than 6 months old.

Now all I need is the instructions to remove the tank..

You need a copy of the A.I.M. for your model year and you need to remove the spare tire & tub to get some working room. If you find that the rubber hoses are just rotted, change them first. I wouldn't go changing out a fuel tank if is isn't leaking. You can change all the rubber hoses pretty easily. Try them first; then replace the tank, IF you NEED to.

Dont I have to drop the tank anyway to get to the hoses?
