C3 1977 - 78 Corvette Question
Question for any Corvette expert. I am very new to this site & hopefully in the right area to direct this question. Any help would be appreciated. I am thinking about purchasing a 1977 Corvette. Car has been licensed yearly in NC & inspected. The title & vin. numbers match. The title states 1977 vette with T-tops & you would think small vertical rear window glass. NOT THE CASE. The rear glass is the 78 style bubble type. I am entirely puzzled. Has anyone ever seen or heard of anything like this? I am not aware of any kits ever produced to convert this. Other then replacing the entire back half I cannot figure this one out. Could they have built this vehicle in early 78 production & titled it a 1977? I checked the cars VIN. number online & it reads out as a 1977. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I again apologize if I am in the wrong question area.
Thank you;

77 was the last year for sugar scoop vetts. 78 was the beginning of bubble backs. If that car really is titled a 77, it's possibly a frankinstien. (accident, and back replaced with a 78)

I would not believe the bubble butt glass came on a 77 factory, my guess is someone replaced the rear clip,
On the other hand seems I do recall a kit to do this, even one for the weird rare opening hatch vette only found on the 82 ce cars......

It sounds like a re-bodied car to me. As far as i know, all 77's (I have two) had the vertical rear window. Someone may have switched a bunch of parts around from two cars to make one good one. If you happen to want a big back window, get a real 78-82. I like both window configurations which i why I have one of each (I also have an 80). Be wary...

The 78 rear glass could have been grafted onto a 77 body. One of the other changes between a 77 and a 78 is the interior. The 78 has a glove box, the 77 dd not. Also i think the 78 speedometer and tach are in a rectangular pod, where the 77 still has the 2 round openings.
If your car has this in the interior then a lot of things were switched out from a 77 body/ interior.

This is a creation of some sort...not GM
It could be a neat car that was put together correctly and OK to buy
it could be a two crashed cars that were melded together by some Tarheel Automotive Engineer named Bubba
My family is from NC so I am familiar with things up there LOL
Just be careful and figure out what you are buying
take a knowledgeable person with you

Just to "pile-on" in agreement with previous posters...yeah that one never happened. Consider that the factory was building at capacity and would not have stopped to build a special unit. If so, it would have paperwork, like buildsheet window sticker that would document the build, like an engineering order or an RPO. And we know that there never was an RPO assigned for the fastback window rolled out in 1978.
As stated, it was a rear-clip graft of a 78 onto a 77.

Thanx, I like it. I have always thought that is the sexiest part of our early C3's, as I've said before- running my finger down that spine reminds me of the back bone of a beautiful Woman.
