Default Question, sound deadening in storage compartment 70 coupe

How much padding did the early coupes have under the lining in the area behind the seats originally? The compartment on mine was re-carpeted completely including the top but there is no underlay of any sort fitted. There is a lot of exhaust noise comes through from this area and I would like to cut it back a bit. Also looking at options to retain the T tops when they are stowed there or other luggage. Not keen on anything flying out of there in the event of a crash! Anybody use a cargo net?

My 73 has a 3-point strap for restraining the t-tops. And it has no padding under the carpet on the bulkhead behind the seats

Hi H,
Here are 3 pictures showing the underlayment I found on my 71 rear compartment carpet.
As you can see it's the most extensive on the wheel-well carpet.
I'd think it was similar on 70 cars.
Hope these help.
Regards,
Alan

Seat bulkhead... only at top where it wraps down to the compartment frame.

Compartment floor and rear bulkhead.

Right side, rear wheel-well.

Thanks for the pics Alan, I will add some sound deadening under the carpet. I will try and locate the mounting points for the three point harness and see if they are still usable.

Hi H,
I believe 70 model year cars had 2 separate straps for the roof panel storage.
I'm not sure just where the fasteners were located.
In 71 the straps changed to the Y shaped strap river described.
Someone posted a picture of the 2 strap set-up recently.... perhaps they'll see this thread and post it again.
Regards,
Alan

Back hooks go here:

Front hook goes between the seats.

Moved the carpet and found that the hangers for the straps on the sides are still there so will look for a set of straps. Also, I noticed that when you rap on the fibreglass between the back window and the fuel tank that it is like beating on a drum, is it worth placing some sound deadening on this surface?

Sound deadening over the wheel housings is a must....on the back wall is a good idea. Don't think you really need it on the floor/doors. And, you shouldn't need any heat insulation back there--unless you are planning on sitting at idle condition for a long time.
