Does the spring actually act as the adjutment wheel's lock?

Yes that is the way it goes.
Left and right adjusters face differently so double check.

Seems unsound, as maybe with time, the gear might eat thru the spring.
And thanks for the reminder on the adjuster orientation. It is indeed the passenger side shoe assembly I'm working on here. The driver's side was a snap and seemed to have just a hair of clearence of gear-to-spring.
BTW, on the passenger side, found BOTH springs, Top and Bottom, broke and layin within the shoes.

Unlike standard drum brakes which actually stop a vehicle and usually have auto adjusters built into them - the C3 emergency brake system is designed to simply hold the vehicle once parked. They have little opportunity to wear the pads this way and rarely require additional manual adjusting after install.

While it doesn't look sensible in design, most of the failures on here are from rust, not wear of any kind. My guess is that if you look at your broken springs, it'll be broken at the crook, not the coil.
