Love both the LT-1 and the 351, but I think the 71' wasn't called a Mach at all, but the 'Boss 351' and it was the best Boss ever! The Boss 429 had heads that flowed waay to much for the cubic inches it had (really good article in Hot Rod magazine on this, they found that the Boss 429 heads really worked well on a 500+ cubic inch engine, unlike the modest performance it had on the street, but go figure, it brings the highest prices? at auction).
The Boss 302 was bad-***, but the Boss 351 was the fastest of them all. I regret passing on a 71' Boss 351 for $6,500 a couple o' decades ago, in blue, with silver stripes... sigh....

(I should know that, Alzheimers' kicking in from too much Cu/copper LOL)
I had a 69 BOSS 302, VIN: 9F02G196980
But yeah, the 350 LT-1 was (is) a magnificant engine.
FORD and ex-GM manager, now FORD manager Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen
decided to Homologate the BOSS "Semi-Hemi" 429 shotgun motor into the Mustang at an estimated monetary loss of $5,000 per car. It was only good on NASCAR, Bob Tasca I in East Providence RI had a wicked fast maroon one. I saw the car (I grew up in RI) but yes essentially it was designed to overthrow the MOPAR Hemi (like the one I have in my 70 Superbee)
People forget...FORD dominated NASCAR in 1969 and Richard Petty drove for FORD in 69'.
