The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines muscle cars as "any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving.

The Corvette is NOT [usually] considered a muscle car. That description refers to a small or mid-sized passenger vehicle which has a much larger/more powerful engine than would normally be placed in that vehicle.
Camaros, Firebirds, Chevelles, Novas, Fairlanes, Dusters, etc. You get the idea.
Full-sized cars, sports cars, etc. are not normally considered "muscle cars".

The Corvette started out as a "sports car" and has been considered one ever since. Was the Jag XKE a 'muscle car'? No. Is the Ferrari a 'muscle car'? No.
But, it's a fee country; call the C3 anything you want.

Wow, another example of calling the cars something they are not.
I suppose there could have been an argument for calling an early C3 with a big block a muscle car before the gutted horsepower smog days but even that was a stretch.
Calling any of the other 99% of the C3s muscle cars is just silly.
Don't be that guy at a car show talking about your 1980 Stingray muscle car.

Chevelle SS is a true muscle car,being a mid-sized car with a hi-po engine option and package,much like GS,GTO,442,Road Runner,Torino GT...etc
Pony cars are small long hood short deck lid taking their styling cue from the "Mustang" hence pony car.
Sports cars are two seat cars that are purpose built with better handling and or performance engines much like vette's AMX and Shelby AC Cobra's.
Its not rocket science but people just love trying to carve out their own version of what is and what isn't from back in the day.

I would say it is a sports car. No rear seat, independent rear suspension, very low to the ground.
Roadrunner, Chevelle, etc. Muscle car. Two doors, rear seat, based on sedans.

Hi,
I went from a 64 Impala 327/300, to a 66 396 Chevelle, to a 68 400 GTO, to my 350 71 Coupe....it's NOT a Muscle Car. But, of those 4, it's the what I'm glad I kept.
Regards,
Alan

alot of good points! thanks. sports car it is! (in my mind now). i have a close group of friends and we each love different makes and models. my buddy who have and loves mustangs has been giving me crap about my love for vetts for years. it even gets to the point were he bands me from comparing a c3 to any other car from other cars in the 60's-70's range.

Mustangs are not considered 'muscle cars' by Chevy folks. They consider them 'pony cars'. But, 1970s Mustang owners with 428's in them would beg to differ....
I think the 'pony cars' should have small block or low powered engines in them. Otherwise, I also consider them to be 'muscle cars'.

he also thinks older engine designs cant touch new engines lol he has not had to change/pay a head gasket on a modular engines yet. i find the "pony car" name kinda funny because the mustang name is taken from the p-51.

You've got that backwards. The 71 Corvette stole the LS6, from the 1970 Chevelle!
I've always considered the Corvette to be a sports car. That's what Chevrolet intended it to be, and that's what they called it, when they introduced it in 1953.
