Appears to need a lot, radio deleted, steering column being worked on, paint etc. Question if A/C, P/W as well as gauges are working. Think I'd pass esp with lost title. Just my 2 pennies worth.

Hi mrm,
Maybe the 'buy it now' price reflects what the car is.
Regards,
Alan

It would be worth looking at. Youll have to check the vin with the engine stamp. And all the usual c3 known trouble areas. I'm terrible at telling people what they are worth, as I always seem to be on the high side. But the owner seems to be straight up in his assessment of condition.

The engine stamp looks a bit weird. I'm far from being an expert, but does it look factory?

MOST of the engine stamp is correct. But, the last 4 digits have been re-stamped manually with a different set of stamps. Not a 'numbers matching' car....at least, it didn't leave the factory with that number on the block.

I don't like anything about it. Wrong color, bad engine pad, messed with under the hood and in interior, missing emblems. Owner knows so little about Corvettes that he advertises it as a Stingray because someone stuck an emblem on it.

The OP's question: "is it legit?" I don't think so.

My 68 steering wheel is wooden colored, has no "stingray" on the side, no way of telling it is a matching number car without a title...the title is the basis for matching number, I don't think Chevy used Mickey Thompson valve covers, lol, however, my 68 has Mickey Thompson 11:15 pistons as that was the only option for 60 over in 1984, and I would think if it is a 3-2 carb car, that finding that set up today would be a costly nightmare if you wanted to take it back to original if in fact that was the case and I am doubting that as by the others saying funky engine pad stamping. The vacumm canister appears to not be original to the car year and lots of home made wiring under the hood.

The car was a big block car from the factory however I think as the tack shows a very low RPM shift point as compared to my 327 and I would think its the original tach ( would take a very smart person with lots of corvette knowledge to change a factory tack just to fool me and you)....big blocks will not turn the rpm's like a small block....was a big block car when it left the factory in my opinion.

While this car needs attention for sure, there are a lot of original not messed with features like the shifter and dash and console and wheels ( partial 69 outer rings) etc that give me hope for the car....overall, I think the car might be a nice car to work with if the frame is good and straight for that money.

Seats are not orig to the car as to the covers, but if the frames are orig and hard to tell from the photo, then new foam and covers would be a standard replace it item on a rebuild.

Plus wrong wheels, wrong seat covers, 69 side fender louver inserts, and lousy pictures, that don't really show you much.

Other than the fact that it is a Corvette, there's not much legit about that car!

That's a small block tach, 327/300hsp. I can't believe he has 7 bids on it already.

The engine code IM is a 427/400hp (tri power) right? I thought that had a 5600 RPM redline as this one does. Am I off base or is the SB tach different in other ways? Never had the pleasure of a BB in my garage.

I need to look at that engine stamp closer. I am not completely convinced it is not legit. I need to ponder this a bit. Interesting.....

Mike?????

John. This one starts at 5300 as a small block should. If it were a 390 or 400hsp. it would start at 5600.

Look again at the tach....

It shows 5600 for red line....327-300 is 5300 red line with the yellow color line starting at 5000 rpm....again, its a big block from the factory car according to the tach.

Red line has a yellow line first...this one shows a color change at 5600.....427 big block without solid lifters!!!

Just found this from restoman 1:

1968 tach yellow/red lines:

base 327/300 engine - yellow 5000, red line 5300
RPO L79 327/350 engine - yellow 5700, red line 6000....Exactly like my blue 68
RPO L36 427/390 and L68 427/400 engines - yellow 5300, red line 5600-----------------tach on this ebay car.
RPO L71 427/435, L71/L89 427/435 and L88 427/430 - yellow 6300, red line 6500

that's what I was thinking above, it looks like the redline is 5600. The yellow is 5300 or so.

Anyone else think the stamp "may" be ok? I know the last 4 look screwed up but the markings underneath the last 4 do not (to me anyway).

I'm no expert and I have not run the numbers to check the build date but the assembly date does not seem out of whack for that VIN.

That shop is the "Graveyard Cars" Mopar place from the Velocity TV show. That must be why they don't know about Vettes.

Yes...I am no expert either John but I do know a little about 68's....very little. I have had mine over 40 years...you gotta learn something after that long.

If New Zealand is anything like Australia, those boys make big bucks...not like us over here in the almost 3rd world country...I think middle income there is about $188,000.00 a year in that area of the world....our orig poster can make this vette into a super nice one much easier than we can.
