Default Old C3 racers.......................

Looking for information from you guys who "were there, back in the day", when Corvette began to rule SCCA racing.......1968 - 69 - 70 -.......

In particular I'm interested in the size wheels (15 x ??? width) and the tire sizes used on the 68 and 69 "NON FLARED" Corvettes.

The first two cars that come to mind are the Garner A I R cars and the Sunray DX cars, but I'm sure there were others. Anyone who was there and knows for sure what size wheels and tires would have been used, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Rex

SCCA production rules (all classes) allowed for wheels 1.5" over stock, I believe you could also update and backdate within the same body work which means a 68 might have come with a 7" wheel so you could run an 8.5 but a 69 came with an 8" wheel so you could run 9.5" wheels, for 1969 you could run a 9.5" wheel on a 1968 Corvette.

Rex I started SCCA back in 1973. By that time the SCCA allowed Corvettes from 1963 to 1973 a maximum of 9 1/2'' wide wheels. These required flares. While I started racing with flared fenders a number of our group did not. They used 10.55 x 15 Goodyear Blue Streak Speedway Specials back then on 8'' rallye wheels. They would fit under stock 63-67 fenders with the inner lips removed and the 68-73 with no adjustments needed. When the slicks came out in 73 I believe the sizes were 25x 15 front and 26 or 27 x15 rears. The 25/26/27 was the tire diameter. Looking for some tires ? ----- Ken

Hi Ken and thanks for the reply. To answer your question.............I "MAY" be looking for some wheels AND tires to fit a stock bodied 68, no flares, stock suspension. I currently have a set of 15 X 8.5 American Racing Torque Thrust D magnesium wheels, 3.75 backspacing, with 6.00 X 15 and 7.00 X 15 Goodyear Bluestreaks, front and rear respectively. They look great but stick out past the fenders about an inch too far. I know the original 68 rally wheels were 15 X 7 with 3.75 backspacing, so I'm thinking I need to go to a set of 7 inch wide TT D wheels with 3.75 backspacing, and even with that wheel I may have to go to a smaller tire. PM me with what you have. I'm sure a real racer like you has all kinds of spares laying around................

Rex if you go to the Registry of Corvette Racecars and navigate to the C2 or C3 listings in the last column there is a red highlight that says "details". Some of the cars have the wheel and tire sizes listed. Many do not but a few do. You may find some info you can use.
Here's a link to the C3 page.

Believe it or not Rex I have a set of 4-10.55 x 15 Goodyears mounted on 8'' rallye's that must be about 40 years old !!! The wheels were purchased in 1972 by me before flares !!! They are still the factory black !! Would be good for display purposes but I would definitely not want to go fast on them. A good friend had them in his garage for all these years . I actually used them once back in the day !!! They still have plenty of tread and don't look dry rotted. I'm not sure if anyone makes repro Goodyear race tires.
Since all my mid years are flared they are of no use to me. Let me know if you are interested . I'll see if they hold air !!
