Default Edelbrock foam air cleaner. Functional or junk?

Due to yet another fitment issues, I had to throw this old air cleaner on last night after a carb swap. Whats everyone's experience with this one? I pulled it off another car years ago as I was told it was a horribly restrictive filter. For now its my only option, but Ir really prefer to run with what Ive got and stop spending money for at least a few days on this car!

I heard they'll catch on fire if your engine backfires though the carb

I had one back in the 70's it was a Weiland and Qwank is right. I had a backfire issue while setting the timing and it burned a hole in it.

What other mini air filters will work with a quadrajet? The one I had (a generic chrome dish model, but the smaller one, I think its 7 inches)
Was too low and interfered with the accelerator pump linkage.

Had one for a long time, the black foam was falling apart after 3-4 years, backfires would melt it somewhat to.

The foam used to start breaking down and would get sucked into the carb.
Need to run a filter for the filter

Get a full size air filter when you get a chance. That itty bitty one is too restrictive for a high performance engine.
Just look at your header tubes and exhaust pipes. If you want to pump that much air OUT of the engine, under pressure, why do you think that a tiny air filter is going to supply enough air INTO it?

Thanks for this post. I was just trying to figure out what filter this was. I couldn't find it in any catalog. One of the cars I am looking to buy has this filter on it. I was leery of it.

My question was what else fits. I cant run a full size filter due to my current hood/scoop setup. The 7" round fit my edelbrock just fine but gets stuck on my Q-jet. Are there any other smaller air filters that anyone here has experience with?

Like many others said, I had 1 and after a couple backfires I found my carb full of little black "crumbs" which turned out to be burnt melted foam. Threw mine in the trash.

You may be able to use a Mr. Gasket air cleaner part # 4339 It's a 14" low profile only 2" above the carb.

Gee, I thought we were supposed to spend money on them everyday. I read that on the Internet so it must be true.

It's true. But, that's supposed to be subliminal...not a conscious thought to go spend money. That way, you just can't stop....

I had to spend more money today.. the Poop Boys Edelbrock 10" model fits fine, with about 1/4" to spare below the scoop. I think It looks nicer than the triangle foam fire crumb maker too.

A guy offered me his 800HP 85 Monte for sale today. I laughed at him and said 'dude, I own a C3 Corvette....Im fuggin broke!!"
