Default 1969 427/400 Temporary starter button/kill switch

I want to start my engine in the chassis prior to setting the body on. The engine has already been run and put on the dyno, but I still have to take out the MSD and put in the Transistor Ignition, adjust the tri-power again I'm sure since it's been sitting for three years, some other details. I will install a water temp gauge and oil pressure gauge, but I need help with the wiring of the ON/OFF switch and also the STARTER BUTTON. I have an original starter and MSD distributor/coil.I'm "electronically challenged" so I need some good direction here

Thanks, Ned

Put a toggle switch between terminal 87 and the start button to use as your "key". Or just remove the battery negative to shut it off.

An even rougher way is to run battery power to your coil and just bridge the starter terminals with a screwdriver. Remove the power wire to the coil to shut it off.

The big round thing is your starter solenoid in case you're wondering

Hi Ned,
I found this while bagm was posting.
Maybe it'll help too.

Alan

While not a kill switch, I picked up a spring loaded foot switch from a tool place, and use that when trouble shooting under the hood. Found this to be the best way.

Ok, I understand some of it....I bought the MSD distributor and coil just to have the engine complete and to dyno, which will be for sale at a later date. Here is what I'm starting with:

Not sure about the MSD distributor. Is it a point type or magnetic pickup?
For the starter, the big post at (roughly) 12:00 is for the battery cable and the small one to the right in the picture is the S "start" terminal. To get it to crank, put a push button between the battery post and that small terminal.
The distributor looks like it has 3(?) wires in that harness. You may need an MSD box (or equivalent) for that one.

I went to see the engine builder and he showed me where to hook up the starter button and on/off switch. Few more details over the next few days and we will have noise....I'll try to post a video after we get it going.

Bagmup...It ended up just as your drawing shows. Thanks, Ned
