Default 68' door hinges different?

i have heard or read (don't remember) that the 68' door hinges are different than later models....although when checking some vendors they list same hinge 68 and up? is there something different about them, if so, how can i tell 68' hinge from later models and can later model hinge be used? thanks, Rick

Rick,
I had a friend that had an old set of hinges he bought for his 78 (I think) that he never did use. He gave them to me and they worked fine on my 68.

68 and 69 AIMs have the same diagram, but show different part numbers for the upper hinges. 3935609 and 10 for 68; 3976361 and 62 for 69. 69 AIM has a revision date of 7/29/69 for the change in part numbers, after the strike. Lower hinges did not change.

I do not know if there are actual differences in the upper hinges. The part number change could have resulted from a change in the manufacturer who was providing the hinges for GM.

Hi Rick
The 68 door hindge is a one year only. If you are getting it judged yes then you need them. If not then don't worry. 69 and up will work.
The difference is a shorter spring and the tounge configuration is shorter than 69 and up. Hard to explain as a pic is easier. But I don't have those 68 parts handy at the moment.

Please be aware that GM changed the lower hinges and, I am sure that all of the new replacements are the later design. They will take a chunk out of the lower edge of your door. Don't ask me how I know this! I had to grind my hinge to clear the door. Lou.

Good education on this thread. I saw a list of 68-only parts listed in a post sometime last year. I'm going to search and see if the hinge was included in that list. BTW, my 68 has 69 doors so I suspect the PO that made this change did swap out the hardware too.

I am guessing I have the 69 hinge based on the chunk taken out of my door when it hit it. I've updated my 68 Unique Parts blog post with the hinge info linking to this thread.

Cheers,
Azza

The chunk can come from any hinge when the spring is bad or broken or the roller is funky. Bad/weak/missing allows the door to open beyond the second stop and bites the door panel.

Azza2u , I am sorry but I did not mean to miss lead you guy's. The lower hinge change is much later, maybe around 1978? But that is what GM would give you as a replacement, over the counter. Lou.
