Default 1970 dash harness pics? Center console

I am working on my friends 1970 corvette that he just bought. The previous owner buggered up the center console harness next to the dash and behind the center console. Does anyone have a picture of the dash with the center console removed? I'm not sure if the harness was retaped properly or if it was just jammed into a cavity where it didn't belong. I've repaired and replaced broken switches, cut wires, bad splices etc. New console does not fit properly, nor does the center console mount properly. The replaced console was crushed and broken pinching wires and short circuiting lamps and interferring with the HVAC controls. If I slide the trans console toward the center upper console it binds. Pushing the radio up moves the dash pad up. The center console does not fit into its cavity because of thickness of the harness jammed behind the console and off towards the column and dash. Also, does anyone have the plastic heater defroster duct that mounts behind the center console? The one currently there has been modified to fit but is not correct. Leaving the upper center console out of its cavity, everthing seems to fit. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks chaz069

I'm not sure pics would be of too much help. The 1970 assembly instruction manual (AIM) would. Have your friend order one.

Early 1970 dash harness routing is different than late 1970.

We're currently trying to narrow down a VIN range for the change...

Still, your best option is to install stuff per the factory A.I.M. The 1971 AIM should show the same drawings as the 'late' 1970 car, so you could be certain of the better wire routing method. I'm sure that with the 1970 or 71 AIM as reference, you can get it back together so it works. That air duct you are having trouble with is expensive if you have to replace it; or, you can just rework the one you have per the AIM's representation of it, so that it will all fit together well.

Not a fun or easy task that you are doing. Best of luck!!

Hi c69,
I'll try to offer some help on getting the center gauge bezel to fit.
The SEQUENCE of how the interior goes together is CRITICAL.... first, the upper dash pad, second, the driver's side lower dash pad, third, the e-brake console, fourth the shifter console, fifth the center gauge bezel, and lastly the passenger's side lower dash pad.
ALL the connections and functions must be tested as each part goes into place.
ALL the screws must be started, but NONE tightened until everything is in place. Then everything needs to be aligned and the screws gradually tightened.
It's a very difficult job on the best of days.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks guys. All this info is great. I thought I might have to remove everthing and start over. I will get the AIM and see if there is a depiction of the upper center console harness position. I have an assembly manual from a 1979 but the pics and diagrams are not clear. Thanks again for the help. Assembly sequence greatly appreciated. Chaz069

Car is a late 1971 not a 70. Does this make a difference? Thanks again. Went to Paragon to hunt for parts in Swartz Creek Mich.

Alan,

Thanks for that info! I bought my car with the interior disassembled and I'm getting ready to install everything. This is exactly what I've been looking for.

AIMs are model year specific. For the most part, what you find in the 79 AIM will not be applicable to cars as early as 71. The opposite is also true. Not much in the 71 AIM will apply to the 79 cars.
