...my old NCRS 5 Star Bowtie 1968 Coupe #14222 was a March 19th build and it was in the forward position. My current '68 convertible is a May 6th(#18434)car and it has the aft position mirror. I've looked at thousands of '68s for a couple of decades & look at the VINs and mirrors. I feel the change was somewhere between #15,800 and #16,500 BUT with all the changes people make, non original cars, non original paint cars, etc. it'll probably never be pinpointed. There is also the possibility BOTH mirror positions could have been made during a few hundred cars.

Paul. my 14,842 coupe only had 22,000 miles on it when I bought in July, 1972, from a girl. Everything was original... even the points and the car conked out about 10 months later, when they crapped out!!! I am sure that the change was due to a safety consideration. The forward position has to block your field of vision, some. Lou.

Here is a brochure for the '68. No date on it but they are usually done at the beginning of the model year. Looks like the mirror is up by the pillar.

...my theory on "WHY" GM moved it "aft" is this. If you mount a passenger side or right side mirror in this same location on the passenger door, all you will see is the pillar post(from driver's point of view). Had a friend do just this on his early '68 and only his wife riding in the passenger seat could only use the right side mirror. The mirror was too far forward to be of any use to the driver!!!!!

There are so many 68's on this forum, can't we get some more input to narrow this down? Paul Borowski, Your coupe # 14,222 seems to be an anomoly. Maybe there was an older door used at the plant for your car? The passenger door chrome mirrors did not come out until a few years later, I think. Lou.

...not sure if you misread my post, but my old #14222 car was in the FORWARD position(like most early '68s), not aft like my May 6th #18434 car was.

Paul, thank you for replying. What I mean is that Ironcross, #13,092 and Champs65 #13,358, have the second position and your # 14,222 has the first position. My #14,842 has the second position. Lou.
