Default Custom built speaker box for my 73

Hello Everyone, I'm finally posting something after spending hours of late night reading of other posts. A little back story: I purchased a 73 Coupe this year from an original owner and I promised him I would not chop this beauty up to make it a nicer ride but I do love the sound of a good stereo. Needless to say the Original radio that still works by the way just didn't cut the mustard. I designed a speaker box (or mount) to hold a complete sound system and it can be removed without ever knowing it was installed in the first place. This is actually a very easy task but to make a box and not loose any of the trunk space... That's the hard part.

Well, after spending $675 it is finished and I am very happy with the sound. I spent about a week working on it because I had to remake it 3 times so everything will fit.
I made 2 templates that are used to hold the 6X9 speakers and those could be mounted by them selves but I also added an upper piece that would hold my subs, amp & stereo.
The picture below shows the area where I will be installing the speaker box. I call it a box because when it is installed, it will actually enclose the upper area of the trunk.

Below is a picture of the templates that I made to fit the 6X9 speakers in. the holes for the speakers have not yet been cut because there are many different size speakers that will fit in this area. I can send out paper cutouts of these templates to anyone if your interested.

The next pic shows the main piece of wood that is used to mount the subs and amp to the driver side & passenger side speaker mounts. They tie everything in together. This piece is 17" deep by 36" wide. With this in place, it will give me 2.75" of clearance for the subs and amp to fit before hitting the top of the roof of the trunk area.

The next picture below explains how to make the 6X9 mounts.

The rest of the pictures are explained. While trying to mount my Subs, I did need to create a 1/2" spacer for them to fit. It was pretty easy.

As you can see it fits really nice and the sound with having such shallow subs is great. If anyone would like more info on this, please feel free to send me a message and I can respond.
Have a great New Year.

that looks good and provides some great photos and reference material for any future projects that might like to use this type of setup. Your step by step instructions made it easy to follow along and understand your setup.

you could make and sell those, actually you 'should' make and sell those, possibly out of a different material. aluminum or kydex maybe? I see $150-$300 without the electrics. nice work

The sound is actually really nice. Deep base and now my wife doesn't complain of the loud engine sound. It's a win win!!!

Thanks Mr Alaska for the complement but the last guy who told me I should turn a business into something that I created is now a business partner of mine and that business takes up way too much of my time. I would rather spend that time driving my Vette.

Well thought out design, especially because it does not require car modifications. Nice.

Excellent! This was/is one of the projects on my winter list. I had similiar ideas, but really like what you did. I'll definitely incorporate many of your ideas. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the nice words. If you would like for me to get more specific on anything that I did, just let me know.

Default Questions for me

I have had some people contact me about the templates for the 6X9 speaker pieces and YES, I will send out some paper that I traced the templates on and cut out. You would just need to cut out what ever speaker size you will be using.

I would recommend tracing my templates on some cardboard and cutting them out and place them in the car to make sure they will fit in your ride before cutting out the wood.

Hi Scott. I'll echo everyone else's comments in the excellent development and pictorial delivery of your post.

I need to get rid of a boombox sitting on the cargo floor of mine. I acquired it in the purchase of my car and I really like your solution. The overhead position of your idea is what makes it so attractive.

I hope to be able to do this in the spring and will bookmark your post for future reference.

Thanks for all the work you did to offer this to the CF. Bravo!

Thanks Dustup, I am thinking of removing everything and taking more pics and then do a step by step write up to make it easier for someone to duplicate.

I'd certainly appreciate that I've been trying to think of a solution for mine and yours is pretty good I must say!

Excellent post and fantastic job on the whole system !
I'm in the same boat with the original deck not cutting it any more and I was looking to ,put a new deck in the rear but was really unsure where/ how!
This thread pretty much explains it all.
Thanks again for all the great info.
