Anyone else overcompensating or just me?

Somebody gave me grief about my 1970 driver not long after I got it. Some crappy remark about how I was trying to compensate for something.
I responded simply that the only folks overcompensating were the ones driving cars that ended in "i".
One rasp out of the sidepipes and I can't believe anyone would ever think this is anything other than a hairy chested man car.
Actually, you need to have pretty big ones just to get it over 90 MPH...42 years old with an original rag joint connecting the skinny steering wheel to the manual recirculating ball steering box that is clamped to the frame with 3 bolts?
Man car.

If 40 is the benchmark for mid-life crisis.... I started when I turned 16 I guess. '71 & '73 Camaros, '37 Ford Tudor Sedan, '57 Chevy Belair, Big Dog Chopper.... Triumph sport bikes, Sea Doos, Sea Ray...etc.
The compensation began early I guess, but I've had a BLAST and so have my wife and son...

Ya know, this thread brings back some memories. When I first joined the Army, as soon as I got out of training and went to my first infantry unit, I did what just about everybody else does; I went down to the PX and bought a ridiculously huge survival/fighting knife. After a while, I realized what most other guys realize, too; it weighed about 5 lbs., and all I ever used it for was to open MREs. So, I sold it to a new guy, fresh out of training, and I went back down to the PX, and bought a little bitty Swiss Army knife, with about a 1 1/2" blade. It worked great for opening MREs, and it didn't weigh 5 lbs.. And, for the rest of my career, whenever some FNG would ask "Hey, Sarge, why do you carry that goofy little knife?" I would always say the same thing: "I'm over-compensating for my enormous genitalia."

I think "overcompensation" is confused for passion for ones interests. Although I own horses I don't consider myself a horse person. Ive seen stables nicer than my home, actually Ive seen horse trailers nicer than my home. Are these people overcompensating? I would never go to that extreme, but I think they are more just passionate about their horse interest than I am.

When I bought my Jeep Wrangler soft top at age 52 a young woman at work ... OK she was probably 40 ... asked me if I was having a mid-life crises. I said, "No, when you see me in a Corvette that will be my mid life crisis". I now own two Vettes ...

Some good stories in here and most revolve around people who
A) Are just stupid and rude
B) Stupid, rude, and simply can't afford what you have
C) Are stupid, rude, simply can't afford what you have, and are jealous.

I'm 62 years old and my response to the mid life crisis bs is usually something like "yeah, so what?". That most often ends the debate; besides if they get out of line I'll just smoke them with my cane.

I smoke canes. Overcompensated and learned the trick of keeping them lit long ago.

I'm compensating all right.
I am compensating for the things I couldn't afford when I was younger and compensating for the things I have worked so hard for.
Compensating is a word one uses when they themself haven't worked hard enough to earn anything remotely significant.

The funny part is my little bro, who at 48 years old, hates the dark brown paint on my 74' and wants me to paint it some wild, exotic color, like Mercedes Benz SLK Electric Blue, or Lamborghini Pearl Orange, just because he thinks everybody on the road HAS to look at your car!
He doesn't understand, that I could give a flying f**, if the Mom in the mini-van even notices my 'Vette! Better yet, leave it alone and let the people who know what it is, know. The lines on the car get enough attention as is...

Been turning wrenches since I was about eight. Okay, at eight, I handed all the tools to my dad and grandpa.
When people ask me if the vette was a midlife crisis, I tell them if being 26 is a midlife crisis, then yes, it was..... 12 years ago.
I look at it like this. This is the age that I have additional money in my pocket due to working hard and earning promotions over the past 16 years. Anyone that doesn't like it or wants to make a snide remark, screw'em.
BTW, when people find out I have a vette and a mustang they ask how I can have a Ford and Chevy. I simply tell them "It's like women. Some guys like blondes, some guys like brunettes. I like BOTH!!"
