Default What would you do?

So there I was cleaning out the garage, Vette was running... guy stops and want to know if it is for sale...

I said sure, what are you asking? between 10 & 12 I say, he says call me in two weeks and gives me his number.

Now whether he is serious or not... I got to thinking what is it worth

79 Vette, pictured in my avatar. Newly painted Yellow, with new black interior. Auto. Lots of the usual work...
QJet tuned by Lars, nice cam, new dist, msd 6a box, dual pipes, headers, everything works except clock and tach. even AC. It is an auto. New windshield, modern retro stereo with ipod hook up etc etc. A real nice weekend driver.

So what do you think? 10-12 seemed strong, no matter what Hagerty says.

Since you said between 10 and 12 its now automatically no higher than 10 and haggling to come.

Why would you build in a $2000 discount into your sale price?
You can always come down but unless 2 people are bidding on your car it's hard to go up.

Always it's

"How much you got?"

Guy stopped by the day I brought my 69 home, and asked if it was for sale. I told him that nearly everything is for sale, for the right number.

He didn't have the right number...

I gave a range because I was not really thinking about selling...

I just answered what I thought it was worth.

Just because that is what I think it is worth does not make it so, hence my post.

if he calls tell him $ 11,000

i would not call him

stay polite, but remind him $ 11,000 is between 10 & 12

those people that give their number, with suggestion to call them in a week or 2 are using that as a polite exit...generally...

I certainly would not feel pressured sell or stick with that number, though it may be accurate.

The value of your car to others, and to you can be 2 different things entirely.

I would agree to this if there was some sort of ad for the sale. In this situation, someone approached another out of the blue and asked for a number. In my opinion, going up would be easy.

You have had time to think about it and realized you were low. If the guy says no, its not like you missed out on a deal; you weren't selling in the first place.

Don't sell yourself short. If they really want your car, an extra $1000 or so shouldn't stop them.

Good comments and feedback all round.

I should clarify, that this is the second time the guy has stopped to talk about the car... He is local and sees me working on it.

It is toward the end of a long project, I have two sons age 11 and 13, spend most of my weekends running to soccer this and soccer that, so rarely drive the Vette.

He seems serious, and I feel like I have reached the point of diminishing returns, everything that needs to be fixed or improved I have done. Would like something for the weekends with four seats so that I can drive the hobby car at least.

I'll give him a call in a couple, if he is serious he can buy it for $11K.

Everything is for sale - at the right price. If you decide the numbers you gave him are not enough to feel good about selling, just tell him that. He'll either walk or understand how you feel and try to work a deal. Either way, it goes better for you.

Thanks Adam,
I posted this thread to get a feel as to whether I was way off with my valuation. Seems I am in the ballpark.

As to whether this guy is serious, has cash and really wants it... who knows. I am certainly not holding my breath nor do I have any expectations one way or another.

My plan is to finish detailing some of the engine bay and get it ready for a Spring sale.

Thanks for all the input.

Excuse me, but why should you call him? Seems to me, if he was serious about the car, he should call you. What's the purpose of his two week waiting period?

Because that is how the conversation ended.
As to why he may have money in two weeks, I don't know nor care.

For a sale to be successful we both have to be happy with the deal. Who calls who is irrelevant

Who calls, you are him can make a difference. If you call it shows you are hungry for the sale, remember you did not approach him about this sale. If he calls again after telling you to call shows he is willing to talk at lease.

Consider this: if he does not call you, he has no interest in the car.
