I'm planning to restore my '76 to the original shade of 'Mille Miglia Red.' However, there's also a GM 'Flame Red.' How would you characterize the difference in hue between them?

And WOW! Those paint jobs look astounding!

Many thanks.

I recently took my '73 LS4 to a car show (won a trophy too..) and was parked near a couple Ferraris that were almost exactly the same red. In the sun, Mille Miglia has an orange cast, so do the Italians. I think GM took a close look at Italian colors when they formulated it. I don't know Flame Red, haven't seen it on a car in-person.

Congrats on the trophy. Now that you mention it, I've seen several Ferraris in that same shade. Yes - there's a subtle orange cast which gives the color a lively snap. I really like it. And isn't 'Mille Miglia' an Italian term?

I recall seeing an internet site that references two shades of red for 1976 - Mille Miglia (paint code 72L) and Flame Red (code forgotten). Perhaps the latter is darker?

Hi Dan, checking my trusty "Corvette Black Book", for 1976 they offered "RED" code 72, 4,590 cars, and "Orange Flame" code 70, 4,073 cars. There is no mention of Flame Red? In fact, browsing the book from 80s to 60s there are "Rally Red", "Monza Red", just "Red", "Mille Miglia Red", and "Medium Red".

Thanks for the correction. I had a brain f*rt. I'd confused 'Orange Flame' with 'Flame Red.'

I'm planning to get bids from paint shops to restore my '76's color. Because the existing paint (or lack of it) is so faded, I want to be sure whoever gets the job applies the right formulation. I'm hoping that the paint code (72) can be duplicated, and the remaining acceptable hue inside the door sills will provide enough info for the desired result.
