Exhaust manifold color
What is the correct color for the exhaust manifolds fitted to a 1969 Corvette with a L-71 spec 427/435 Tri-Power engine? Black, silver, natural cast color, or ??
Does anyone (such as Eastwood or such) sell a high temp spray paint in the correct color? If so, does anyone know the specific color name, part number or such?
Also, I know that high-temp paint must be used ... but what level of heat must it withstand ... 1,200-degrees, 1,500-degrees or ??

Hi CK,
Since the exhaust manifolds were unpainted on small blocks (the manifolds weren't on the engine when it was painted), and big blocks had just minimal orange overspray on them (their manifolds were in place when the engine was painted), the typical 'color' was bare cast iron with a bit of rust 'bloom' on them. Your bb would have had a bit of orange on the manifolds where they bolt to the heads.
There are things that can be done besides leaving them bare.
High Temperature Cast Blast, (or similar), paint makes them a nice flat gray that holds up well. 1200-1400 degrees will suffice.
There are some coatings like Calyx that are rubbed on the manifolds to stop the rust. It works but needs to be redone on occasion.
It sorta depends on how you're going to enjoy your car as to what you do.
Regards,
Alan
