Default bought a starter from Ecklers

Firstly, I paid for 2nd day air, received it 6 days later. "We don't ship 2nd day from outside vendors". So, WHY did you offer 2nd day delivery?

Then... they sent the wrong starter. A big block starter won't quite fit a small block. The "outside vendor" confirmed that it was the wrong part
and was confused as to why Ecklers had the wrong numbers in their system.

So... I sent it back. It took 10 days, from the day that they signed for the package to process the return. But... no money yet. "Call us Wednesday of next week to see if we've credited your account."

$48 2nd day shipping plus $23 return shipping is what the whole order fiasco cost me... on top of the part. Their mistake cost me $70+.

After a series of emails, I told them that I'll NEVER order another part from them.

I feel for ya Pat, I'm all for supporting our vendors when it comes to Corvette Specific parts........but when I need basic parts, I'm going to the local parts house as small block Chevy parts are plentiful, cheap, and more importantly.....readily available.
Hope you're back on the road soon brother.

with the above...the 2nd day air cost more than you can buy a starter for.
I guess I have to ask, why?

Pretty sad when they can't even supply you with a freakin' starter I bet their "outside vendor" was Advance or Autozone, marked up 100%

You're probably right , they just drop the lifetime warranty that Advance and Auto zone give you when you buy it from them.

I know how you feel about this. It has come to the point that when I need a part I will take the old/broken part to the store with me to compare the old part with the new part before I buy it. Too often the part they try to sell me is not the same as what I am trying to replace.

Why is the OP at fault ?? Everyone seams to be pointing out his wrong which was NOT wrong. Why he chose to order as he did is no ones business and the fact is ECKLERS really messed up and should be refunding this guy $70.00 ......

just trying to give advice that is more logical and quicker and economical than the OPs transaction horror story. nothing wrong in trying to tell the OP that there's a better way...

An unfortunate event that will in the end turn out to be a learning experience. Everyone is just trying to bring home the fact that common use parts are better purchased locally and save the specific parts for the vendors although various interpreted ways of conveying the same. It's all good.

I have had so many problems over the years with junk rebuilds, regardless of where I bought it. I now just rebuild my own. New bushings, brushes and solenoid is all it usually takes. Cost is less than $30.00

A very valid point Pete, even if like most of us you could care less about NCRS standards, at least there'll be a certain originality to the car, which I find pretty cool.

Are you sure that a big block starter won't fit a small block?

It's more a matter of which flywheel/flexplate you have as opposed to small or big block.

Well Eckler's new owners said there would be no changes and they are true to their word! Eckler's has gotten so bad that I haven't ordered from them for years. Nothing but high priced junk! I stick with Willcox or Paragon as much as possible just because of problems like this.

There really is not a difference between big block and small block starters.
What matters is the transmission and the size of the flywheel/flexplate.
Really all automatics are going to use the staggard bolt starter with is for a 11" clutch or anything with 168 teeth, the smaller flywheel which is 153 teeth uses the starter that have the bolt holes straight across from each other. The difference between a auto starter and a four speed start are the bells of the starter. The manual is steel and the auto is aluminum.
Hope this helps you.

J. Abbott - what would happen if one were to run an aluminum starter on a manual?

(aside from death, destruction, fire raining from the heavens, etc)
